Hello fellow Bradley's!! I am looking for information on my great-grandfather Alexander Bradley and his wife Bridget (McCoy) Bradley. He was born in 1851 in County Donegal and emmigrated with his family to the US in 1870. They settled in Arlilngton, Illinois and then moved to Nebrasla in 1885. They had several children including John, Frank, Anna (Woods), Mary (McBride), William, Agnes (Prochaska), Stephen, and Eleanor (Turner). Any more information you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot. Jill Bradley- Applegate

According to the BRADLEY SOCIETY JOURNAL (Jan 19,1994, VOL I., NO. 1 now extinct?) "IRISH BRADLEY ORIGINS.... Bradley is the English family name generally used to identify the descendants of a noted Irish clan whose Gaelic surname was O'Brolachain. The descendants of Brolachan, an ancient personal name. The adaptation of Bradley is an aglicization of O'Brolachain is another haphazard way in which registrars sometimes used what they thought might be the nearest English equivalent when transcribing Irish names into the records for the first time. The truer transliteration of the name, O'Brollaghan, survives in some places but is comparatively rare. The Irish Bradleys were a famous Ulster family whose original home was the district around Clogher, County Tyrone. This clan traces its descent to Suibhane Meann, King of Ireland in the 7th century. From Clogher, they spread northward to Derry and Donegal in the service of the O'Neills and O'Donnells and later down the westewrn seaboard through Mayo down to Cork and Kerry. Numerically the family name is still strongest in Tyrone, Derry and Donegal, while Cork is their Munster stronghold. In history the name appears most frequently in Irish Annals as noted churchmen and educators. Hugh, the son of Maelbrighde O'Brolachain, the builder, was a celebrated ollav or professor. His brother, Maelbrighde, was Bishop of Kildare. Donal O'Brollachain was Abbot of the famous monastery of Derry, while Flaibhertach O'Brollachain rebuilt the Cathedral of Derry in 1164. Many others of the name continued this family tradition of learning down until the Elizabethan wars brought the decline of the leading Gaelic clans of Ulster and with them their cultural heritage. In the United States, Colonel Bradley was one of Washington's trusted leaders. Most Reverend Dennis mary Bradley (1846-1903) was the first Bishop of Manchester, New Hampshire." _______ ...No references given in the article. Gary Bradley Livermore, CA
Recently I asked if anyone had information about Charles, James & Daniel Bradley, an Irish family living in Glasgow in 1851. I have since found out that their mother or grandmother was a de Vere (aso Irish) - any links? Isolde

I heard that a 3rd or 4th cousin about 14 years ago had someone research our family tree. The finished product was that they were able to trace it to the Mayflower. There were no Bradley's on the Mayflower. It's been on my mind lately, and I was wondering if any of you out there were able to trace a Bradley back to the Mayflower. I don't have any of this info in my files now. I was only like 10 at the time, so to me it's all just hear-say anyways. I would imagine it would take quite some time and a lot of $$ to pay someone to research all the maiden names too, so I'm just "assuming" it's through Bradley. Maybe it was a different Mayflower..: ) Also, it was said that our line of Bradley was at one time O'bralligan?? I can find no references to this name at the moment, I've only heard it said, never written down. Anyone know how to spell it? Thanks. Melissa

Hi fellow subscribers, Below are two messages from Dr. Brian Leverich, the RootsWeb owner, discussing some costs for operating the RootsWeb server. As you may know, RootsWeb is funded through voluntary contributions from users like you and I. Please review the personal benefits derived from becoming an annual contributing RootsWeb Member, Sponsor or Donor and how the contributions are used at the following website: http://www.rootsweb.com/rootsweb/how-to-subscribe.html I wish to extend my appreciation to those who have already made voluntary contributions by becoming either a RootsWeb Member, Sponsor or Donor. Those who have contributed to RootsWeb are encouraged to indicate your RootsWeb membership status in your signature line when posting queries or responses to the surname discussion list(s). The cost to operate RootsWeb in Fiscal Year ending July 1997 was about $60,000; and, FY98 is anticipated to cost about $150,000. Please take the time to read both of Brian's messages which are appended below. Thanks for your time and support. I'm passing along the question and my answer to everyone because other folks might be wondering about this. I hope my post about the search engine wasn't taken as > impatience or ungratefulness. ------------------ Hi - The prebuilt VArServer 3000 we have on order from VA Research will cost us $13,500. That server is planned to be used as the upgrade to the current www.rootsweb.com server. The old www.rootsweb.com will replace the current mailhub.rootsweb.com, which in turn will become a dedicated DNS/MX server: nothing ever goes to waste at RootsWeb. (: The handbuilt search engine server, which is slightly larger/faster than the VArServer 3000, has cost us about: Server case & heavy duty power supply $ 500.00 Motherboard $ 500.00 Pentium Pro 200 CPUs w 512KB caches[2] $ 1,000.00 128 MB EDO SIMMs[8] $ 3,200.00 RAID-5 caching disk controller $ 1,800.00 Seagate Barracuda 9 GB ultrawide SCSI drives[5] $ 4,500.00 Tape backup $ 500.00 IDE 4GB system drive $ 200.00 3COM 3C900 100Mb ethernet adapter $ 100.00 Video board $ 100.00 CDROM drive $ 100.00 Keyboard & mouse $ 100.00 Misc cables, mounting brackets, & such $ 100.00 ---------- $12,700.00 Any contribution you can make would, of course, be much appreciated. BTW, and folks don't often realize this, it really is *much* more a matter of money than my time because money can easily substitute for my time. VA Research servers cost about 15-20% more than the machines I can handbuild, but buying preconfigured machines saves oodles of my time. If RootsWeb ran at less of a loss, we'd always be buying prebuilt servers and using my time that was freed up to do more useful things like getting whizzier cgi-bin tools set up for the Webmasters and Listowners. If I wanted to > send this message to my subscribers (about 1000 to 1500 now) is it: > > A good idea? ------------------ It's a good idea, *but certainly not at all an obligation*. Here's why it's a good idea. RootsWeb costs *real* money to operate -- about $60,000 in our fiscal year that ended in July 1997 and, with demand growing at about 15% per month, we expect to spend in the neighborhood of $150,000 this year. And that's just barely scraping by on servers and bandwidth. More income would let us buy more prebuilt servers, which would help us do things like get the archives back on line faster and add other whizziness for the Webmasters and Listowners. Also, more income would let us do what we *really* want to be doing, which is buying genealogical data and uploading it to the Web for everyone to freely use. Our experience has been that posts listmasters have passed on to their lists are our single best source of income. So it's great and we *much* appreciate it when listowners help us fundraise. BUT IT'S NOT AN OBLIGATION !!! No listowner has an obligation to even mention RootsWeb on their lists. Thanks to everyone for their support! If it weren't for RootsWeb's Members, Sponsors, and Donors, there wouldn't be a RootsWeb. -B -- Dr. Brian Leverich Co-moderator, soc.genealogy.methods/GENMTD-L RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative http://www.rootsweb.com/ P.O. My ancestor, Charles Bradley, was born in Ireland, but in 1851 he was living in Glasgow with his brother, James, James's wife, Catherine, and their baby, Daniel. A cousin, John Carboy, was also sharing the house. A couple of years later, Charles married Mary McCormick and migrated to Australia. I would be very glad to hear from anyone who has information which may link to this family.

I downloaded the Virginia map and it is a great resource. However, be forewarned, with a 14.4 modem it takes about 20 minutes to down the VA map. Perhaps, a similar download time will be required on the other state maps. However, the download time is a minor inconvience and well worth the time and effort. Jim Young -------------- Pam Rietsch <prietsch@ismi.net> writes: Hi Rooters.... Well almost 16 months after I began the project, the data entry portion of the 1895 Atlas is complete. All of the states, except Alaska (which has a map only) plus the District of Columbia have data which shows what towns where around in that time period. Each town also shows the population, the county it is located in, where in the state it is located, whether it has a post office, a railroad station or an express office. This is especially helpful if you have some sort of a record from either the 1880 census or the 1900 and in some case state census of 1885 where it shows a town that cannot be found on current maps. So many small towns over the years have either totally disappeared, or been merged with other larger towns and have for all intents and purposes vanished. The nice thing about this project is that you can also download a map of the state also to see the exact placement of your town in question. Watch the site over the next few months as I intend to do lots more to make it more user friendly....and will also be scanning in the world maps that came with the atlas. I will not have data for them, but I think the old maps could prove useful in research. The site can be found at: http://www.ismi.net/lcmigw Several people have had difficulties in printing out the maps, so I now have a special page set up with instructions on how to accomplish this feat, just a click away. If there is anything I can do that would help you to use the Atlas better, please feel free to contact me. Remember to do your "hug homework" ! Pam
