    1. Re: [BRADFORD-L] Bradford-Truitt connection
    2. Adam Bradford
    3. Apologies in advance for the lengthy post - but I want to get a lot of information out all at once. 1) In the Maryland archives online marriage records there is a Nehemiah Truitt who married a daughter of John Bradford, as follows: Truitt, Nehemiah, m. by 1 Feb 1760, (N), dau. of John Bradford of WO Co. (MDAD 44:206). Source: http://www.mdarchives.state.md.us/msa/stagser/s1500/s1527/html/ssi1527t.html So the records indicate that Nehemiah Truitt married a daughter of John Bradford, but I've seen no indication of her first name other than some unsourced family trees. One family tree I saw online had Nehemiah Truitt's wife's name as Mary Bradford, but claimed she was the daughter of Hezekiah Bradford. I have no idea where this came from. At any rate, no matter what her name is, we know that one of John Bradford's 8 daughters married a Nehemiah Truitt. If anyone has any proof as to her first name - please let us know. 2) I want to have us clear up something about John Bradford, Jr. - because a lot of people have him dying in 1776 and I have no idea where this information came from. On that very helpful Ocean City Museum website, http://www.ocmuseum.org/genealogy/search/will_search.asp, there are the wills of 2 John Bradfords. There's the one who died in 1756. I believe this is the father John, the one who moved from Accomack. John Bradford Will Date: Probate Date: John Bradford 3 September 1742w. 5 October 1753p. To my wife, Margaret, all moveables with exception state. To son Nathaniel land called Saint Martin's Deserts, a description. To my son William, part of land stated above. To son John, 100 acres of plantation called John's :pt. To my eight daughters, only on daughter is mentioned by name, and she being Rebecca, personalty after the death of their mother, Margaret. Margaret Bradford, EX. Wit; Robert Rathbone, George Jarman. There's only 1 other John listed, as follows: John Bradford Will Date: Probate Date: BRADFORD, John 24 Dec 1810w. 11 Jan 1811p. To my grandson Powell Patey, the EX. (exec). To grandson Kendal Patey. To grand-daughters Betsy Patey and Fanny Patey. To my daughters Chloe Mills and Polly Bradford. Wit; Joshua Prideaux, William Dale, Stephen Cropper. 1806-13, 236. I have been operating under the assumption that this second John Bradford who died 1810-11 is the son of the original Worcester John Bradford. He would have to have been extremely old at the time of his dying, but in this will his grandson is old enough to be the executor, so it's likely he was in fact extremely old. My guess is he probably had sons who aren't listed in the will, because by this time they would all be almost grandfathers themselves and not in need of anything from their father. And I'm guessing that one or more of the 3rd generation Bradford males of Worcester whose parentage is undocumented (Samuel, Elisha, Avery, Purnell, etc.) are probably the sons of this John Bradford - meaning Samuel could be one of them. But I've seen lots of others list John's death as occuring around 1776. Can anyone tell me where this date comes from? There must be another John I don't know about. As for John Jr's wife or wives, I've seen the a lot of people list his wife as Esther Smith. I believe this comes from the will of William Smith, who mentions a daughter Esther named Bradford, but doesn't mention a husband's name. If anyone has other proof to substantiate that her husband was John, please let us know. William Smith Will Date: Probate Date: William Smith 1764 w. 19 June 1766p. Wife Rebecca EX; son John 50 acres; son Levi; son Thomas EX; son William, daughter Sarah Smith, daughters Rebecca Smith, Esther Bradford, Mary Timmons. Wit; Joseph Jones, Joseph Jones, John Webb. Ah, but then there's Belitha Powell, who mentions a sister Sally wife of John Bradford. This is the Sally who is daughter of Samuel Powell (see below) Belitha Powell Will Date: Probate Date: Powell , Belitha 13 Dec 1800w. 13 Feb 1801p. To my brother John Powell s children, Esther Powell, Molly Powell , John Powell, lands and to their mother, Keziah Powell, one fourth part. CYPRESS SWAMP that I bought of Richard Sampson is to be sold to sister Sally Bradford, wife of John Bradford. My cousin Jesse Powell, EX. Wit; John Postly, Erasmus Harrison, Samuel McCrea. The bonds include, Abisha Davis. JBR 1799-1803, 203. Samuel Powell Will Date: Probate Date: 4 May 1770w. 21 June 1779p. To my son John Powell, the lands that cousin Thomas Powell was possessed of when he died, 200 acres and 60 acres that bounds William Beanham's, and Richardson's Bridge. To son Biltha/Byltha Powell, the balance of Richardson's Ridge, he the EX. To my son William Powell, the tract called Powell's Addition to Richardson's Ridge, 50 acres and part of the tract Richardson's Ridge. Wit; Zadock Powell, William Bainum, Abijah Davis. 1769-1783, 434. So it would seem that, whether or not John Jr. married Esther Smith, he definitely married Sally Powell, sister of Belitha Powell and daughter of Samuel Powell. Could this be where Samuel Bradford's first name came from? From his grandfather Samuel Powell on his mother's side? Just speculation. --- Leona Mastan <lmastan@jps.net> wrote: > Bradford-Truitt connection: > > It has been said.... > Job Truitt married Mary Powell.
