These are just different things I saw in looking around for information on GILES BRADFORD & NANCY CAROLINE UNDERWOOD while looking for a link between the Maryland Bradfords & SC Bradfords who match genetically. The sister of Nancy Caroline Underwood, ELIMIRA (b. May 14, 1835) married one _______ BRADFORD. They were the daughters of BENNETT UNDERWOOD & ELIZABETH MATHIS both born NC. [Bennett's parents were WILLIAM 'WEDGBAR' UNDERWOOD (1759-1851 Buncombe Co. NC) & POLLY EASTRIDGE.] The son of _____ BRADFORD & ELIMRA UNDERWOOD was JEPTHA M. BRADFORD (who married Kansas Pitman, Apr 6, 1890, Fannin Co, GA) . In the 1870 Census of Gilmer Co. GA, ELIMIRA BRADFORD, age 34, b. NC and Jeptha M. Bradford, age 11, b. GA were living next door to B. UNDERWOOD, age 70, b. NC & wife ELIZABETH, age 69 b. NC. (note: Husband Bradford was dead by 1870) So now we have UNKNOWN & GILES BRADFORD who married UNDERWOOD sisters. The 1860 Census of Gilmer Co., GA shows: GILES BRADFORD, age 45, farmer, b. GA NANCY, age 27, b. NC JOSEPH M., age 9, b. GA FLORIDA M., age 3, b. GA CANSAS, age 1, b. GA next door: JOSEPH BRADFORD, age 45, b. GA MARY, age 37, b. GA GILES, age 16, b. GA LUCY, age 15, b. GA SARAH E., age 13, b. GA JAMES P., age 12, b. GA NANCY M., age 9, b. GA Catherine R., age 8, b. GA THOMAS A., age 5, b. GA WILLIAM, age 2, b. GA Then a vacant house.... Then next door: THOMAS BRADFORD, age 26, b. GA LUCY BRADFORD, age 60, b. South Carolina So now we have GILES, JOSEPH, & perhaps their mother LUCY and her youngest son THOMAS living next door to each other in 1860, and naming their children after each other. In the 1870 Gilmer Co., GA Census: (Giles is now in TN) JAMES BRADFORD, age 21, b. GA (probably son of Joseph) ANNA, age 30 , b. GA WILLIAM, age 1, b. GA ARTY, age 6/12, b. GA JAMES UNDERWOOD, age 59, b. NC MARTHA, age 62, b. NC WILLIAM, age 26, b. NC MARTHA, age 23, b. NC JOHN H., age 20, b. NC same page: JAMES BRADFORD, age 63, b. SC POLLY, age 46, b. GA SARAH E., age 20, b. GA NANCY M., age 18, b. GA KIZZY C., age 17, b. GA THOMAS H., age 15, b. GA ENOCH, age 6, b. GA JOSEPH A., age 4, b. GA Male (Farmo?), age 5/12, b. GA Go back to top: B. UNDERWOOD & ELIZABETH as well as ELIMIRA & JEPTHA - 1870 Gilmer Co., GA Summary 1870 Gilmer Co., GA: JAMES BRADFORD - maybe nephew of GILES; JAMES UNDERWOOD - maybe brother-in-law of GILES; JAMES BRADFORD right age to be brother of GILES; B. UNDERWOOD father-in-law of GILES; ELIMIRA BRADFORD sister-in-law of GILES, JEPTHA nephew of GILES. 1870 Putnam Co. TN Census: GILES BRADFORD, age 55, b. SC CAROLINE, age 38, b. NC JOSEPH M., age 19, b. GA FLORIDA M., age 12, b. GA CANSAS, age 11, b. GA GEORGE A., age 10, b. GA GILES, age 3, b. Tenn. JAMES, age 7/12, b. Tenn. Summary: WERE Giles, unknown, Joseph, James, and Thomas Bradford brothers? and sons of LUCY? All probably born SC, as was Lucy? According to an English site, GILES is a fairly common English male given name. The earliest GILES surname I see in the south was WILLIAM GILES, 1650, Henrico Co., VA and WILLIAM GILES, 1792, Chester District, SC. (Previous to this the only Giles I had run into was Giles Hudspeth who married into a completely different Bradford line in NC ) Any and all input would be appreciated. Regards, Becky
