Wales Land Sr. was plowing his field when he was approached by men from Internal Revenue and was shot in the back while bending down to pick a rock out of his boot. He was left on his porch still alive, but he died before his wife Augusta Bea, 7 months pregnant with Jane Marie, found him. He was 27 years old. Clarke T. Ward, Augusta Bea's father, was so outraged, he strapped on his gun and went to the court house demanding justice and was arrested.. Clarke Ward has stated that his son-in-law had enough money in silver coins to buy his own airplane in his house and it "disappeared" about the time of his murder. J. Wales Land Sr. murderers and/or robbers have never been brought to justice. John Moses Land tried to sue the IRS, but the case was handled extremely poorly. J. Wales Land Sr. enjoyed photography and took many pictures back in the 1920's. He also had his pilot's license and was going to buy his own plane before he was murdered.
