Surnames: Bradford, Worrall, Newlin, Griffis Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3YF.2ACIB/1899 Message Board Post: I'm trying to find info on my gr.gr.grandfather, Abraham Bradford. An unconfirmed source says he was born in Pennsylvania, most likely the Phila./Chester/Delaware Counties area. I have no dates of birth or death, but he and his wife, Eliz.Worrall, had my gr.grandmother in 1859. Her name was Anna Mary Bradford. She married John Newlin. She died in 1917. I'd like to know when Abraham was born, when he died, and who his parents were. Thanks.

    1. Solomon Bradford of Worcester County, Maryland: Dispelling Two Common Misconceptions
    2. adam bradford
    3. Having just returned from the Maryland Hall of Records, I have two discoveries to report that should clear up a lot of the confusion regarding Solomon Bradford of Worcester County - namely, whether there were two Solomons, and whether one of these Solomons died in 1788. The sole evidence for the presence of two Solomons comes from Ruth Dryden's book on Worcester County land records. Under the history of the tract JOHNS LOT she provides the following abstract: "17 May 1771 Solomon Bradford son of John sold to William Davis." It turns out this is twice an error, as I discovered by viewing the actual deed. First, the deed was not a sale, nor was Solomon's other deed on the same day (to William, Jr. of St. Martin's Desert) a sale. Both these were quitclaim deeds. William Bradford, Jr.and William Davis were already in possession of the tracts. In 1771 Solomon was simply selling them his rights to the land, as eldest son of the eldest son of John of Accomack, and therefore John's heir at law. Furthermore, in Solomon's quitclaim to William Davis he is not referred to as the son of John, but the grandson of John - meaning John of Accomack. Another error which has caused some confusion over Solomon is found in a widely-viewed abstract of Pharoah Warren's will, namely the one posted on the Ocean City Life-Saving Museum's website. The abstract reads as follows: ". . . Wit: isaac Evans, Solomon Bradford, he is now deceased, and Valentine Ryan. JW 13 202." But the actual record does not refer to Solomon as deceased. Since only 2 of the 3 witnesses appeared to prove the will, the abstractor must have extrapolated Solomon's death. That is a misinterpetation of the record. As only two witnesses were required for a will to be valid, Solomon's presence was not necessary. Evans and Ryan were sufficient for probate. This information should be of assistance to all of us trying to sort out these Worcester Bradfords. It's also more proof, if proof was needed, that it's always a good idea to check original records - every abstractor makes mistakes now and then. I'll eventually place full transcriptions of both these records on a website I've just started developing at www.delmarvabradfords.com.

    3. Erin, this is no problem for me. I do a lot of Googling for gen research. I just bookmarked your page -- I had lost it from last time I marked it -- and now I will Google from your page instead of their homepage. Doesn't cost me anything, and if it helps maintain a useful website, so much the better. Alie Jo

    3. I'm almost afraid to send this, I meant to send this message last month and just realized today I hadn't yet. I wrote a new article with the above title and have linked it to the website. You can access the article by the main page or directly at: http://www.gendepository.com/articles/conservation1.html The article is written in 6 sections: an introduction, document conservation, digital photographs, original photographs, conservation tools (a glossary), and resources where you can learn more. Although these articles don't address any specific surnames, they are relevant to anyone who has any family photographs or documents (including copies from the archives). Please feel free to take a look. 3. Dear Erin: I'm glad you're not having any dealings with Ancestry.com. I've had some very unpleasant experiences with them. In fact, I had to enlist the aid of the Better Business Bureau to get them to cancel my subscription and stop billing me for services I hadn't signed up for. I recommend all members of the list to proceed with great caution in any dealings with this company. Yours, Joe Gardner

    1. Announcement regarding the website
    2. Erin Bradford
    3. Hello everyone, it's your list monitor here. I wanted to let everyone know about changes I am currently making to the website (and for those who don't know about it, introduce you to the list). As most of you know, I maintain a site called "The Genealogy Depository" (see signature below) that acts as a supplement to the list. A lot of the material on the site has been submitted to me by list members or I have asked list members for permission to post data from an email to the pages if I felt it was relevant. For those of you who've been on the list since March 2004 or earlier, you know that I left my Rootsweb site back in April 2004 and now have my own domain, which I pay for out of my pocket. I graduated in May with my MA in Public History, concentration in Archival management, but due to the fact that I cannot find a job yet, I'm having a hard time scraping all the money for the site together. I'm not asking for money from anyone, please understand that. What I have done is to sign up with Google Adsense program, which in short means I put ads on my page and everytime someone clicks on one, I earn a percentage. Money I earn goes directly to help pay for the site. I've had ads up on the page for about 2-3 weeks now, fine tuning, etc. and earned $1.44 so far (yay!!). Also, there is a new search box, which works the same way, if you use that box to perform searches (including regular searches you would normally go to the google homepage for), the site earns a percentage of those as well. So far, the site hasn't earned anything from the search box, but it wasn't working properly before. I finally tweaked it so that search results will be displayed that includes specific pages on the site as well as the internet. So now, if you do a search for "Richard Bradford" it will return all pages on the Genealogy Depository AND on the www. This is an improvement over the old search box. That one only returned matches on the Depository and not the www. It took me a while to figure it out, but finally got it and it's up and running and I've tested it out, so feel free to use now. Both the ads and search box will be on the sister site, http://www.ncalhn.org. Ok, another thing I have done is also signed up for being an associate/affiliate for Heritage Quest, Willow Bend Books, and Amazon.com. If you see a book linked from my site, it will take you to one of these sites and as with the google ads, the money earned go towards paying for the site. The difference with google ads and associates of the bookstores is that with google you don't have to buy anything, you just follow the ad, but with the bookstores, nothing is earned until a person actually purchases an item. It doesn't have to be that item you clicked on though. Also, I know that ancestry.com has an affiliate program, but I have no plans at this time to get that because the Genealogy Depository is FREE and will stay that way. There are too many sites out there that say something like, follow this link to see a ship list or something and then it takes you to ancestry and you have to sign up and pay for it. I HATE that! I will not do that to you guys. IF I ever do go with ancestry, it would only be to take you to their books, like with Heritage Quest, etc. Lastly, I know that some of you will have a problem with not only the ads on the website, but for me getting money for them. I am sorry if you have a problem, but it's really the only way I can keep the site going. It's just a way for the site to basically pay for itself. I know when I first signed up with Amazon 5 years ago and informed the lists about it, I got some very angry responses to it. I just can't please everyone, so I'm sorry if you're upset about the changes. Ok, this is long enough, so I'll sign off now. Please continue to submit information for inclusion on the website. Remember, I can't do dig up a lot of this info, about 90% is submitted from others. You maintain the copyright to the material (at least the portion that is copyrightable), and I do give credit where credit is due, in other words, if you submit information, I will say that, I will not claim it as my own. Good luck everyone with your research. Turns out my guy -Thomas Bradford(1844-1892) had a brother called "Doc". The story says that "Doc" was apprehended robbing a train and was identified because of his exceptionally small feet. No one else in the area had such small feet. I think this happened in the Woodville MS area (but not sure) sometime between 1850-1920. Has anyone ever heard anything like this? We don't have any more information but even a real first name for "Doc" would be helpful. . Thanks for any help you can offer. karenlyon@ntown.com

    1. Updated webpage information
    2. Erin Bradford
    3. Hi list! I know I haven't done much to the website this past year, but I've FINALLY updated information! For those who have been to the site in the past couple weeks, you've probably noticed a few changes. First off, let me soothe any fears of the site going commercial. I know that when folks start seeing ads on sites that weren't there before that there might be more of a commercialization of the site going on. That is NOT the case here. I have added links by google as a way to help me pay for the site. I am paying around $100 a year, give or take a little, for webhosting and domain registration costs. The ads through google help to pay for the site everytime someone clicks on an ad or performs a search using the google search box. The search box SHOULD but it's not working correctly yet so realize that if you do a search, it will search the entire web. I'm trying to fix it so it searches both the site AND the web. Keep your fingers crossed it works, otherwise I'! ll have to go back to freefind search box which searches the site only (and doesn't help me with costs for the website). So far, the ads and search box have gotten me 97 cents :) hehe. Long way to go for the site to start paying for itself, but every little bit helps! Second, I finally found it! The Will of David Bradford of Mecklenburg County, father of James, Samuel, Michael, and David Jr. and husband of Mary (possibly Lancaster, although that is in question). Ok, it's not the actual will, just the abstract right now, but I'm going back to the archives next week and will hopefully come back with a copy of the REAL will and not just the abstract. I've posted the abstract at the webpage, so take a look. Third, I haven't touched the Bradford marriage records page in over a year....until now! Last night I updated the format of the page into a table (it looked messy the way it was) and at the same time updated the marriages with marriages from NC I've found but haven't added. Last, I have uploaded a series of articles that I wrote for www.genealogyforum.org, where I host chats on Southern US genealogy. the articles are about conservation of documents and photographs for future generations. Please do take a look at that. Good luck everyone and please do submit any information you wish to include on the website, including articles. The website address, if you don't have it bookmarked, is in my signature below. Erin Bradford List manager http://www.gendepository.com - The Genealogy Depository
