    3. Becky, Thanks for the information - as always you are selfless and prolific with information. I saw the census info yesterday myself, but where did you find the Underwood information you listed at the top? Finding out what those middle initials stand for may provide important clues. I'm going to see what the FHL has available from Gilmer County, GA and then do some investigating. Lots of good leads here. Thanks again, - Adam On 1/20/06, Becky Mosely <beckymosely@comcast.net> wrote: > These are just different things I saw in looking around for information on GILES BRADFORD & NANCY CAROLINE UNDERWOOD while looking for a link between the Maryland Bradfords & SC Bradfords who match genetically. > > The sister of Nancy Caroline Underwood, ELIMIRA (b. Line of #23640: 1. Giles Bradford, b. 1/14/1815 SC m. Nancy Caroline Underwood, b. 4/5/1833 Macon Co., NC 2. Giles Bradford, b. 3/5/1867 Putnam Co., TN m. Samuel Vance Bradford b. 11 May 1846, Relfe, MO 5. William Henry Bradford, b. 20 July 1882, Waynesville, Missouri These results are quite interesting and should provide some clues for both of these participants. I personally had expected the Giles line to connect to the Richard group... BUT those two lines are not even close (genetic distance of 16 at 12 markers). Regards, Becky

    1. The Census Taker - A Poem
    2. Diane Bradford
    3. I saw this great poem on another list. Merry Christmas - and happy census hunting! Diane Carrington Bradford Atlanta, GA THE CENSUS TAKER It was the first day of census, and all through the land; The pollster was ready ........ a black book in hand. He mounted his horse for a long dusty ride; His book and some quills were tucked close by his side. A long winding ride down a road barely there; Toward the smell of fresh bread wafting up through the air. The woman was tired, with lines on her face; And wisps of brown hair she tucked back into place. She gave him some water ..... as they sat at the table; And she answered his questions ..... the best she was able. He asked of her children ..... Yes, she had quite a few; The oldest was twenty, the youngest not quite two. She held up a toddler with cheeks round and red; his sister, she whispered, was napping in bed. She noted each person who lived there with pride; And she felt the faint stirrings of the wee one inside. He noted the sex, the color, the age. The marks from the quill soon filled up the page. At the number of children, she nodded her head; And he saw her lips quiver for the three that were dead. The places of birth she "never forgot"; Was it Kansas? or Utah? Or Oregon ..... or not? They came from Scotland, of that she was clear; But she wasn't quite sure just how long they'd been here. They spoke of employment, of schooling and such; They could read some and write some ..... though really not much. When the questions were answered, his job there was done; So he mounted his horse and he rode toward the sun. We can imagine his voice loud and clear; "May God bless you all for another ten years." Now picture a time warp .... it's now you and me; As we search for the people on our family tree. We squint at the census and scroll down so slow; As we search for that entry from long, long ago. Could they only imagine on that long ago day; That the entries they made would affect us this way? If they knew, would they wonder at the yearning we feel; And the searching that makes them so increasingly real? We can hear if we listen the words they impart; Through their blood in our veins and their voices in our heart. Author Unknown

    1. Pilgrim William Bradford
    2. Hello, There is a lot of information stated by Angie Sullivan's source that is extremely outdated. According to the book "Mayflower Families Through 5 Generations - William Bradford" Vol 22, published by the General Society of Mayflower Decendants in 2004, many birthdates are incorrect, one being his son Thomas, my ancestor, born 1658 not 56. Also, Thomas married Anne Raymond (not Anne Smith) d/o Joshua and Elizabeth (Smith) Raymond. Another is that Major William married 3rd, Mary (WOOD) HOLMES. The list goes on and on. Also, according to Caleb Johnson's Mayflower History, Gov. Bradford was a fustian weaver, or a maker of corduroy not a silk weaver. Sincerely, Carol Tyler Scarborough 8th GGDaughter Gov. Wm Bradford Founder & Governor, Waco Colony Texas Society of Mayflower Descendants President/Historian Society of Governor William Bradford Descendants, Inc.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/3YF.2ACIB/1957 Message Board Post: PILGRIM WILLIAM BRADFORD (GOVERNER OF PLYMOUTH) William Bradford and Beverly Briggs are 1st cousins 11 times removed. Their common ancestors are Alexander Carpenter-8N0X-46 and Priscilla Dillen-8LBZ-MS. William Bradford was born in 1590 in the small farming community of Austerfield, Yorkshire. His father William died when young Bradford was just one year old. He lived with his grandfather William, until his grandfather died when he was six. His mother Alice then died when he was seven. Orphaned both from parents and grandparents, he and older sister Alice were raised by their uncle Robert Bradford. William was a sickly boy, and by the age of 12 had taken to reading the Bible, and as he began to come of age he became acquainted with the ministry of Richard Clyfton and John Smith, around which the Separatist churches of the region would eventually form about 1606. His family was not supportive of his moves, and by 1607 the Church of England were applying pressure to extinguish these religious sects. Bradford, at the age of 18, joined with the group of Separatists that fled from England in fear of persecution, arriving in Amsterdam in 1608. A year later he migrated with the re! st of the church to the town of Leiden, Holland, where they remained for eleven years. Bradford returned to Amsterdam temporarily in 1613, to marry his 16-year old bride, Dorothy May. In Leiden, Bradford took up the trade of a silk weaver to make ends meet, and also was able to recover some of the estate in England that he had been left by his father, to support himself and his new wife in Leiden. They had a son, John, born about 1615-1617. By 1620, when a segment of the church had decided to set off for America on the Mayflower, Bradford (now 30 years old) sold off his house in Leiden, and he and his wife Dorothy joined; however, they left young son John behind, presumably so he would not have to endure the hardships of colony-building. While the Mayflower was anchored off Provincetown Harbor at the tip of Cape Cod, and while many of the Pilgrim men were out exploring and looking for a place to settle, Dorothy Bradford accidentally fell overboard, and drowned. John Carver was elected governor of Plymouth, and remained governor until his death a year later in April 1621. William Bradford's chair. Photo courtesy of the Pilgrim Hall Museum Bradford was then elected governor, and was re-elected nearly every year thereafter. In 1623, he married to the widowed Alice (Carpenter) Southworth, and had a marriage feast very reminiscent of the "First" Thanksgiving, with Massasoit and a large number of Indians joining, and bringing turkeys and deer. Bradford was the head of the government of Plymouth, oversaw the courts, the colony's finances, corresponded with investors and neighbors, formulated policy with regards to foreigners, Indians, and law, and so had a very active role in the running of the entire Colony. With his second wife, he had three more children, all of which survived to adulthood and married. Beginning in 1630, he started writing a history of the Plymouth Colony, which is now published under the title Of Plymouth Plantation. A number of his letters, poems, conferences, and other writings have survived. William Bradford was generally sick all winter of 1656-1657; on May 8, Bradford predicted to his friends and family that he would die, and he did the next day, 9 May 1657, at the age of 68.
