Bradford's only child, Richard Bradford, a novelist, wrote: “My father was born in [Lauderdale County] Tennessee, on a farm. He didn’t go to college. In fact, he didn’t finish high school. When he was in tenth grade, he ran away from home and joined the army, spent WWI in the army, though not in France, was commissioned, somehow, got out of the army, married his first wife, his high-school English teacher (I think I’ve got the order straight here), became a newspaper man in New Orleans, and at some point in the late 20s began to write free-lance. He and my mother met, I think at what is known as a “literary tea,” in New York. And he got divorced; they got married; I was born in 1932 in Chicago.” Although Bradford was white, his principal subject was black life in the deep south. A search in WorldCat will give you a complete list of his extensive bibliography. Bradford's first wife was Lydia S. I don't know her last name. She died of TB in Santa Fe, NM in 1940. If you find out anything about her, I would appreciate knowing of it. Bradford's second wife was named Mary Rose -- and again I don't have her maiden name. Their son Richard died a couple of years ago. He wrote the novel "Red Sky at Morning."

Go to: http://home.comcast.net/~bradford222/index.html and tell us what the name of JOHN BRADFORD's wife is in his Brunswick County will of 2 November 1732. On the subject of 'Indentured Servants': This particular John Bradford..... I personally have researched most of the folks on the immigration list that COULD be THIS JOHN BRADFORD, he is not among that list. He could be the SON of: Richard Bradford immigrated to Virginia in 1653; servante to Roger Walter or Walker. This is what I found on this subject: "There is some confusion about the name of the man who was headrighted land in return for financing Richard I's immigration to the Virgina Colony. One author reports that benefactor's name as Roger Walter. Another source reports that man's name as either Roger Walker or Roger Walters. The confusion apparently arises from the partial illegibility of the original headright record filed in the Virginia Land Patent Office. Most likely, Richard I's alleged benefactor was the Roger Walker who arrived in the Virginia Colony in 1620. ................................... Richard I's alleged benefactor, whatever his name, was headrighted 600 acres of land in Northumberland County, Virginia, for paying for the trans-Atlantic passage of Richard I and eleven other men. .................. It is only fair to note that the record of the land headrighted to Mr. Walker, while interesting from a historical perspective, is not as helpful as it may first appear since headrights were frequently sold or traded. Hence, it is possible, even likely, that a colonist other than Roger Walker paid for Richard's immigration but later sold or traded that headright to Mr. Walker. Indeed, Richard Bradford I appears to have never lived or worked in Northampton County, the site of the land headrighted to Mr. Walker. Richard I apparently spent the rest of his life in Virginia's Charles City County." Source: The Bradfords of Charles City County, Virginia by David Thomas Bradford, page 2 For Entire Book, Go To: http://freepages.family.rootsweb.com/~bradfordfamily/book/nameindex.html Questions: 1. Where was Northumberland County? Northern Neck? 2. What was the time an 'indentured servant' was required to work off his passage? (David Bradford says 3 to 7 years, think I have mostly seen 7.) 3. Yet what I have found is that Bradfords, including myself and the vast majority of my relatives, try sometimes desperately to trace their lineage back to the Mayflower. If that fails, another attempt is made to connect to someone relatively important and/or prosperous. The point I was trying to make is that some of us Bradfords are bound to be descended from indentured servents. My personal belief is that I am. At 53 years old one might think that I would not be so naive, but at a family reunion I just assumed everyone was interested in the truth and announced my Bradford Branch's descent from an indentured servent. I doubt I'll hear from those relatives again, and do not expect an invitation to the next reunion HA! I would be interested to hear what other Bradford researchers have found in terms of indentured servents. I also trust that Erin does not mind her work being referenced below.
