To all direct male Bradford descendants of Samuel Bradford of Snowhill, Worcester County, MD, greetings. I invite you to join the Bradford Y-DNA project. I and another Samuel descendant have already joined in the hopes that we can use DNA to help unravel the msytery of Samuel's parentage. We need more. The more participants we have the better we'll be able to determine Samuel's own y-DNA signature, the better to match him and us up with other lineages that might provide clues or further confirmation of Samuel's parentage. Descendants of other early Worcester Bradfords have signed up and we are eagerly awaiting their test results for a possible match. Please write me if you're interested or if you have any questions: bradford_adam@yahoo.com. NOTE: Participants must be descended in an unbroken line of males from Samuel in order to take part (sorry, folks - that's just the nature of the Y chromosome). WARNING: The possibility exists that one's DNA may reveal a descent other than the one you believe is yours. If you don't want to even entertain confronting this possibility, then DNA is not for you. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I ask because both Gadberry and Bradford are names from the Higden, Arkansas area - this is now Cleburne County but before about 1883 it was Van Buren county AR. I have a couple of Bradford researchers from that area if you are interested. Mary Turney Miller

The post that you are speaking of was in the year 2000. Since that time, I have all the WJD's families. My grandmother was from his marriage to Nancy Catherine Young. I have also been in touch with members of his second marriage. I probably don't have a lot of info on Marguarite. But I have corresponded with David Bradford who would be the grandson of Carl Bradford, the youngest son of WJD. Without double checking, I believe that is correct. Lets stay in touch by e-mail. E-mail me anytime at Nancy2189@aol.com. David may read this and comment also. Thanks for writing. Nancy

Dear List, In the records of Bristol, RI, we find that Joseph Nash of Providence, and Mrs. HOPESTILL BRADFORD , of Bristol, were married by the Rev. John Burt on 9 Jan 1756. (The term "Mrs." in this record merely indicated Hopestill's social rank; she was single at the time.) Hopestill was still alive in 1762 or 3, when Joseph Nash and she were parties to the sale of land in Plympton, MA, which had been willed to her father, Capt. Gershom Bradford, by his father, Samuel Bradford.. What has intrigued me for years is the statement, in "Other Descendants of Captain Gershom Bradford" by Charles Bradford Elwood, in NEHGR, Jan 1956, page 48, that "Hopestill, drowned in the Mississippi River; m. Joseph Nash , Providence, RI." Do any of you Bradford fans know the story of that drowning? I have never even seen a proposed date for the event. Any help with this puzzle will be greatly appreciated by Rick Sherman Kensington, CA

If you know that your ancestor belonged to any family association such as the Ballou, Bradford, Chase, Dickinson, or Starr Family Association find out who was the secretary. Reason is that they may have left the notes and records to a local historical society. My great grandfather was one of the founders of the Ballou Family Assoc and the secretary for the Starr Family Association. His manuscript collection contains members handwritten Starr genealogy applications and some obituaries and even a few photos which he left to the New England Historical and Genealogical Society (NEHGS) in Boston. My clue to look at this manuscript collection came to me when I quizzed my mother on what she remembered about her grandfather. The thing that impressed her the most was that he use "to file every letter that came into the house in a box in the basement."
