    3. In 1890 Ruth Beattie, a resident of Coulterville, Randolph Co. Illinois, applies for a pension on the service of her husband Francis H. Beattie. She states that he was a Private in Captain G. H. Hook's Company in the 1st Regiment of Ill. Vol Infantry commanded by Edwin W. Newby in the war with Mexico. He enlisted at Bellville Ill. on 26 May, 1847 and was discharged at Alton in Oct. 1848. She states that her maiden name was Ruth Stevenson and that she married Francis on Aug. 28, 1849 at Pittsburgh, Penn. She states that Francis died March 5, 1886 at Centerville, Illinois. She was born June 29, 1830 at Pittsburgh, Penn. Francis was born Jan. 11, 1824 at Sparta, Illinois. Francis was 5 feet 5 inches tall, brown hair, light complexion, blue eyes. He was a farmer and School Teacher at the time of his enlistment. Ruth owns a house & lot in Centerville valued at $250.00. Two original documents are in this file: 1) A Church certificate (small handwritten paper, mistakenly sent and marked "please read & return")--I do hereby certify that Francis H. Beattie a married man is a regular member of the Ref'd Presb. Church in Pittsburgh. He has been absent from this place for some time, but I have heard nothing against his character. John Black Pastor of the Ref'd Pr. Church in Pittsburgh Augt. 28th 1849 2) A marriage certificate--a small hand written note marked "please return this." I hereby certify that I joined in marriage Francis H. Beatie and Ruth Stevenson, Aug. 28th 1849. John Black pastor of the Ref'd Presb. Church in Pittsburgh All. Co. Pa. A Bounty Land Claim letter dated May 8, 1849 from the Pension Office stating that Francis H. Beattie was awarded Bounty Land, giving claim # and a note stating he sold the Claim Manifest. Testimony from Adam Miller & John T. Alston of Coulterville, Illinois stating "We were both present at the time of his death and helped to dress and care for him and that he was buried on the 6th day of March 1886 at the Fulton Semetery (sic) near Sparta (Randolph County Stat of Ill.)" Thomas J. Hendricks of Perry Co., Illinois states that he "was a Comrade of Francis H. Beattie in the War with Mexico." Several other neighbors and a doctor testify. Thomas J. Stevenson of Allegheny County, Pennsylvania states he "was present at and witnessed the marriage ceremony of the marriage of Francis H. Beattie to Ruth Stevenson ( a sister of the affiant)...Said marriage took place at the Residence of William E. Stevenson on Fountain Street in the City of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania..." John A. Stevenson of Johnson County, Iowa states in 1893 "I am 71 years of age...I was present at the marriage of Francis H. Beattie to Ruth Stevenson....I am brother of said Ruth Stevenson and of the said William E. Stevenson." Ruth was dropped from the pension rolls due to death April 1902. There is a note "expl. to J.
