In 1917 David Baty is living in Fort Bidwell, Modoc, California. He states that he is 74 years old and was born in Brown County, Ohio. He served under Minute Captains Major Smith, Major Mellon and Captain MacGregor stationed at Fort Bidwell fighting Piutes in Northern California and Nevada in 1866-67. He was not enlisted or discharged (his claim is denied because of this). On another form David gives his birth date as Feb. 4, 1843. Before he enlisted he lived at Effingham Illinois and Ft. Bidwell. He is 5 feet 11 inches, 160 lbs has gray eyes and gray hair with a fair complexion and a "scar on right temple, caused by fall in fire in childhood." His wife's name is Mary Walls and they married June 1898 at Lakeview Oregon (fire destroyed their records). He also married Sarah Streif June 19th, 1872 and she died Dec. 12, 1896.
