Indian War Pension In April 1917 John R. Baty is living in Fort Bidwell, Modoc County, California and files a claim for survivor's Pension --Indian Wars. He states that he is 77 years old and born September 3, 1839 at Brown County, Ohio. He states he served under Minute Captain MacGregor stationed at Ft. Bidwell, California, fighting Piutes (?) in Northern California and Nevada, 1866, was not enlisted or discharged. Also under Major Smith and Major Mellon. On another form filed in April 1917 he states he was born Sept. 3, 1840 in Brown Co., Ohio. He states "Scarcity of soldiers, 30 of us citizens organized a company elected A. S. Ross capt., joined Maj Smith & Maj Mellon, hunted Indians 2 weeks in hard battle Feb 14, 1866. He gives his wife's name as Laura Mason Baty and states they were married Oct. 30, 1870 in Goose Lake Valley, Cal. by Judge Bomer. He also describes a scar "Two in. scar on breast bone done by Indian with scalping knife." David Baty states the following "I David Baty...I am more than eighty years of age (in 1923); that I have resided in Surprise Valley, Modoc County, California since 1864; that John R. Baty is my brother and that I know of my own personal knowledge that during the time from 1864 to 1867 the said John R. Baty fought in a number of skirmishes with the Indians..."
