    3. Some one asked if anyone knew who the parents of this William is. I do not, but found 2 lineages associated with Gaston County, NC: L56 and L203. I also remembered this earlier post I had made--I not not how it connects but this Francis also lived in Gaston, NC. From: Southern Christian Magazine Of The South, The Erskine Miscellany, and The Due West Telescope, 1843-1863" compiled by Lowry Ware, SCMAR, Columbia, South Carolina,1993 Page 40 Died at the house of Dr. Brice, Fairfield District, S. C. on the 9th of October last, John A. Beattie, son of Francis Beattie, Gaston County, NC.....only twenty one years of age ["Christian magazine of The South" the issue date is on the previous page, next date is January, 1851, looks like a monthly magazine, so it is most likely Dec. 1850--if anyone needs the date let me know and I will copy it next time I am at the library] Page 121 "Due West Telescope" May 25, 1860 Died near Pisgah, Gaston Co., N. C., Miss Salena Faris, on the 1st of May, in her forty eighth year. She was a member of a large family and has left but one of that family behind her--a sister--Mrs. BEATTIE, at whose home she was living, and who stood at her dying bed. Miss Faris was a native of York District, and raised near the Nation Ford; made a profession early in the Methodist and afterward in the A. R. Church, Pisgah, N. C. Page 127 "Due West Telescope"--again the date wasn't copied but the next issue date is August 24, 1860. Died at house of FRANCIS BEATTIE near Pisgah, Gaston, NC, January 26, 1860, Mrs. ESTHER BEATTIE. Mrs. Beattie had been a widow for many years. Her husband, JAMES BEATTIE, a native of Carlisle, Pa., was near the spot and heard the roar of battle, that memorable day, when Col. Campbell and his faithful mountain boys routed the Tories on King's Mountain. he was some time Clerk in Long Creek...filled for many years the office of ruling elder in Pisgah A. R. Church. In 1824, he and his family moved to Macon Co., N. C. and built a house of worship there, and perhaps organized a church, which was occasionally visited by Dr. McElwee and others. Then in 1828, JAMES BEATTIE died. His widow returned to Crowder's Creek and resided with her little children. 3. Laurel, Re the citations from the Southern Christian Magazine and Due West Telescope: About the ESTHER BEATTIE who died in the home of Francis Beattie and the widow of James Beattie, we believe these people are part of L-98. Francis was her son. About Miss Salena Faris, this is a bit of a mystery. We believe L-98 Francis Beaty married Mary Falls. "Miss" Salena Faris sounds like she never married. So, the question becomes, was her name Faris or Falls. Hummmm! About John A. Beattie, son of Francis Beattie, Gaston County, NC who died in South Carolina, I suppose this could be a son of L-98 Francis, but I really don't know. About the William L. Beaty named in the Mexican War Pension, if he enlisted in the army as a private in 1847, I would extrapolate his birth year at around 1827 (assuming he enlisted at age 20). Could be four years on either side, I guess. I suppose he could have been part of L-98, perhaps a son or nephew of Francis. Francis and his next two brothers were born in 1799, 1801, and 1804, respectively. I suppose any of them could have had a son born in 1827. All is speculation, of course. Les Beaty, L-20B/L-241

    3. Laurel and All, Rats! I sent the message below before I had finished editing it. There are at least 9 separate Beaty families listed in the 1850 US Census of Gaston County, NC. Hence, speculating that John A. of SC and William L. might be related to L-98 would be a stretch without supporting evidence. This census shows a Salina Farris, age 34, living in the household of James O. Beaty (age 26, b. Gaston, NC) and his wife, Margart L. (presumably Margaret L.). The Mrs. Beattie referred to by the Southern Christian Magazine and Due West Telescope could be Margaret. That would eliminate the Faris/Falls mystery. But then, I don't know whose kid James O. was.
