----- Original Message ----- From: <info@familytreedna.com> To: <natt_batey@sbcglobal.net> Sent: Friday, October 24, 2003 3:48 PM Subject: New DNA Test Results Posted Your HVR1 mtDNA test results have been posted to The Family Tree DNA mtDNA Database. Follow the link below for more information at your Family Tree DNA personal page. The mtDNA database of Anthropological Origins contains the female inherited mitochondria that all of us receive from our mothers. Due to the slow rate of polymorphism (change) within the mitochondria the predicted time to the MRCA is much further back in time than it is for Y-DNA matches. Whereas our 12 marker Y-DNA test provides a 99% likelihood that 2 people who match exactly share a common ancestor within 14.5 or fewer generations 50% of the time, an exact match on the female side provides the same confidence level, but at 52 generations. On the other hand if you have a rare DNA sequence, one with many changes, that has only been found in a restricted geographical population or ethnic community you may be able to confidently contact relatives. Over the next few months you will see many additions to this area including explanations from the scientific literature about the haplogroup that your mtDNA has been assigned. For the first year of our company's existence we didn't ask Country of Origin for males (the father's, father's father), and we have just begun asking for that information from women, or the maternal side of men. Therefore, your Country of Origin might show Unknown Origin. To update your maternal Country of Origin simply follow the link below to your personal page, select update, and provide the information. As always we invite your comments and suggestions. Bennett Greenspan President Family Tree DNA http://www.familytreedna.com/ftLogin.asp?kit=9040&code=R1258
