Volunteers, War of 1812 This fie only has an Original Discharge notice-the name on this notice looks like Uira Petty (clear P, not a B). He was 19 years old in 1815, born in Vermont and the discharge was given in Ohio. Isaac Betty, Act of 47 160, Wt 51,491; Private in Captain Godall's Company 12th Tennessee Volunteers, War With Mexico. This Isaac Betty is L133. I will transcribe the entire file (it is very short). Carthage, Tennessee Sept. 12, 1848 Sir, Enclosed you will find the application of Isaac Betty for Bounty Land. He wants a Land Warrant. Please, ??? & send us his warrant as soon as posibal (sic). Goodalls Company [E] Fourth Regiment of Tennessee Volunteers, who was enrolled on the Twenty First day of October one Thousand eight hundred and Forty Seven to serve DURING THE WAR WITH MEXICO, is hereby HONORABLY DISCHARGED from the service of the United States, this 31st day of July 1848, at Memphis Tennessee by reason of being mustered out of the service on the expiration of his term. Said Isaac Betty was born in Smith County in the State of Tennessee is Twenty six years of age, __ feet ____ inches high, __ complexion, ___ eyes, _____ hair, and by occupation, when enlisted a ___. On this 30th day of August in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty eight personally appeared before me the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace for the county and State above mentioned, Isaac Betty who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical Isaac Betty who was a Private in the company commanded by Captain John D. Goodall in the Regiment of 4th Tennessee Volunteers commanded by Col Richard Waterhouse that he enlisted on the 21st day of October 1847 for the term of during the war and was discharged at Memphis Tennessee on the 31st day of July 1848 by reason of expiration of his term of service. Howard before whom the above affidavit purports to have been made is a Justice of the Peace duly authorized to administer oaths and that the above is his signature. If he wishes to receive scrip in lieu of land, and the relinquishment must be witnessed by some one who writes a legible hand. I thought I would add some additional information that I have on this family: Betty, Isaac Mexican War pension E 4 Tenn. Vols.; filed Apr. 28, 1887; Ill [COPIED] L133? Isaac Betty filed for a pension for service in the Mexican War on April 16, 1887. In his application he states "I am 67 years of age having been born at Smith County Tennessee on the 6th day of December 1820." He enlisted at Nashville, TN on Nov. 1, 1847 and was discharged at Memphis, TN in August of 1848. He was a private in the company commanded by J. Goodall in the 4th regiment of Tennessee Vols commanded by Col Waterhouse in the War with Mexico. He is a resident in 1887 of Butler, Montgomery county, Illinois. He is married, his wife is still living. Her maiden name was Louisa Allen and they married at Lanchaster, Tenn. on July 2, 1840. He was awarded a pension (certificate # 4588) and was last paid Oct. 4, 1891 when he was dropped due to death. There is an estate paper in the file (Letters Testamentary) giving his date of death as Dec. 29, 1891 and naming Charles H. Betty as executor. This is a short file (7 pages). Betty, Robert C. "D" 126 Ill. Inf.; filed Sept. 30, 1892 in Kansas; certificate # 958060 Widow: Mary C. Betty; filed April 14, 1923 in Idaho; certificate # 935939 Robert C. Betty (son of Isaac and Susan, see below) was born March 27, 1845 at Arion County, Tennessee [there is no such county-could this be White County, i.e. Aryan??]. He enlisted on November 22, 1862 in Columbia, Kentucky and was discharged on July 12, 1865 at Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Since his discharge he has lived at Montgomery County, Illinois to Cherokee County, Kansas about 1870, to Dewey County, Oklahoma in 1900. In 1907 he is living in Custer County, Oklahoma. There is a marriage certificate which shows Robert C. Bettey married Miss Mary C. Sharadon on Oct. 13, 1867 in Hillsboro, Montgomery County, Illinois. In 1897 Robert states that he has 5 living children: Lucy C. Betty born Aug.25, 1868, married C. S. Black; Minnie Louise Betty born Nov. 1, 1869 married W. G. Jones; Louis Tillman Betty born January 28, 1876, married; Tommie Arleta (?) Betty born February 14, 1878; Christie A. M. Betty born January 14, 1882. On another form he lists the following deceased children: Carrie Emley born May 29, 1872, died Aug. 2, 1873; Ida May born December 1, 1874 died Jan. 29, 1875; Nora (?) Ellen born May 10, 1880 died May 9, 1881; Lidia A. born Oct 20 1889 died Oct. 9, 1892; Alpha (?) born Oct. 24, 1894, died June 27, 1895. In 1908 Robert states that he was 17 years old when he enlisted and that "the date of my age as shown in the War Department is an error, for which I was in no way responsible. The error was made by the enlisting officer, without my knowledge. The record of my age was preserved by my parents Isaac and Louis Betty in a family Bible. Do not know what became of it after the death of my parents." In 1908 Francis M. Betty of Cherokee County, Kansas states "I am the brother of Robert C. Betty. I am two years his senior. I know the age of Robert C. He was born on the 27th day of March 1845 in the State of Tennessee. These facts were of record in my parents' family Bible. This record was kept by my parents up to the time of their death several years ago. Since their death I have lost all trace of the said family Bible." In 1920 Robert was living in Bingham County, Idaho. Betty, Francis M. "C" 70 Illinois Infantry; filed Dec. 28, 1896 in Kansas; certificate # 934293 Widow: Betty, Lucy O.; filed Dec. 13, 1915 in Kansas; certificate # 805972 Francis M. Betty was born April 5, 1843. In 1912 he is 69 and living in Columbus, Cherokee County, Kansas, although his application is filed in Jackson County, Oregon. He states that he enrolled at Hillsboro, Illinois on June 6, 1862 and was discharged at Alton, Illinois October 23, 1862. In March of 1900 he is living in Salt Lake County, Utah and is 63 years old. He gives his place of birth as Sumner County, Tennessee but on another form he gives his place of birth as Smith County, Tennessee. He states that he has lived in Illinois and Kansas since his discharge. In 1890 he states that his wife's name is Lucy Olive Cory Betty and that he was married Dec. 21, 1864 in Hillsboro, Illinois by Rev. Livingood, a Lutheran minister. He names the following living children: C. H. Betty born April 19, 1866; T. A. Betty born June 5, 1868; H. L. Betty born March 18, 1871; O. J. Betty born Feb. 12, 1873; Fred M. Betty born June 26, 1884; Roy E. Betty born Aug. 23, 1887. A marriage certificate is in the file. Francis Marion Betty's death certificate is also in the file-he died September 29, 1915 in Cherokee County, Kansas. In 1916, Thomas B. Cory of Butler, Illinois and Henry A. Cress of Hillsboro, Illinois state that they were present at the marriage of Francis M. Betty to Lucy O. Cory, which took place at the residence of the parents of Lucy O. Cory. Betty all my lands, Negroes, stock of all kinds, and every thing else to live on, and raise our children on, and as the children come of age, I want such as can be spared, to be given to them by valuation, not giving them more than their part, and when the youngest comes of age my loving wife Martha A. Betty to have the place I bought of Samuel Varner, her life, and then to be divided equally amongst all my children all the balance of my estate, and all the profits that is made if any, except land, to be equally divided between my wife, and all my lawful heirs, my wife holding the same 'til death, then to be equally divided amongst my children the balance of my land also to be equally divided between my lawful children and I hereby make and ordain my loving wife Martha A. Betty executor of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof the said Isaac Betty have to this my last will and testament set my hand and seal the year above written. Palmer, Guardian Recorded 10th March 1832 I think the Robert Betty mentioned in this abstract is the Robert Betty who lived briefly in White County. >From "Smith County, Tennessee Chancery Court Records 1824-1871" Compiled by Thomas E. Partlow, Southern Historical Press, page 48: Chancery Book 2 WILLIAM R. BETTY and others versus Samuel Caplinger and others. The bill of complaint of Robert Betty, Robert Lancaster and wife Araminta, formerly Betty, Robert Betty[name appears twice], and Isaac Betty (who by their guardian, William Betty) of Smith County versus Henderson Palmer whose residence is unknown and Samuel Caplinger of Smith County. In 1829, Henderson Palmer was appointed guardian for Robert C., Isaac Betty and Araminta Betty, now Lancaster, minor children of Betty deceased.
