John Beaty, Company "I" 57th Indiana Infantry, widow Nancy A. Beaty (certificate # 105,054) guardian John Lautenschlager (minor's certificate # 176,744) On April 21, 1866, Nancy Anne Beaty, age 34 and a resident of Owen County, Indiana applied for a widow's army pension. She is the widow of John Beaty who was drafted at Terre Haute, Indiana (7th District) on Sept. 20, 1864 in Company "I" in the 57th Regiment of Indian Volunteers and who died of chronic diarrhea "as is supposed while a prisoner in the hands of the rebels, he having been last heard of dangerously sick in the rebel prison near Meridian, Mississippi." Nancy Ann Need was married to John Beaty on July 4, 1850. The following children survived John Beaty: Elizabeth Beaty, born April 23, 1851; Robert Beaty born Jan. 11, 1853; Ann Beaty born Aug. 6, 1856; Sophia Beaty born Aug. 4, 1858; Naomi Catherine Beaty born Nov. 8, 1860; Mary born Jan. 6, 1863 and Hannah Beaty born Jan. 12, 1865. On April 21, 1866 George Biddle, a resident of Owen County, Indiana states that he was captured at the same time as John Beaty and confined in prison with him in Meridian, Mississippi and "that I last saw him when he was being removed from the stockade prison to the rebel hospital; he being then so low that I had to assist him to the ambulance to be hauled; and I have no doubt that he died on or about the 15th day of January 1865." On July 26, 1867 Andrew Smith states that he was a member of Company "C" 57th Indiana Infantry and was acquainted with John Beaty in Company "I" of the same Regiment. On the 30th day of November, 1864 "he as well as the said John Beatty were taken prisoners by the enemy while in Battle near Franklin in the state of Tennessee; that after they were captured and while on the march to Meridian in the state of Mississippi said John Beatty was taken sick with diarrhea and so remained sick with said disease after they arrived at Meridian in said state and were confined in prison there until about the last day of January 1865 when he became so weak and reduced by said disease that he had to be taken to the hospital at said place." William Crawl, a member of Company "I" 57th Indiana Infantry was also captured with John Beaty and confined at Meridian, Mississippi. He states he "messed with said Beatty during his confinement in said prison until he (Beatty) was taken to the hospital as aforesaid; that about the 1st of February 1865 he removed from said prison to Andersonville in the State of Georgia that at the time he was removed from said prison said Beatty was very weak and much reduced by said disease and in the opinion of affiant could not have survived more than a day or two after said date." Catherine Beatty states "she is the mother of John Beatty" and affirms the date of marriage and birth dates of the children. Rebecca Walden acted as a midwife at the birth of Robert, Ann, Sophia, Naomi, Mary and Hannah. On December 7, 1876 John Lautenschlager, aged 54 and a resident of Hausertown, Owen County, Indiana filed a claim for pension for the minor heirs of John Beaty. He is the guardian of Naomi, Mary, and Hannah Beatty, the only children still under the age of 16 at the date of his marriage to Nancy Beaty, widow of John Beaty. A copy of their marriage record shows that John F. Lautenschager married Nancy A. Beatty on April 25, 1876. On May 25, 1901 Nancy A. Lautenschlager, aged 69 and a resident of Harrison Township, Clay County, Indiana filed a claim for restoration of pension. She states that John Lautenschlager died on Oct. 31, 1898 at Marion Twp., Owen Co., Indiana. Simon and Leah Travis of Owen County, Indiana state "they were present at the death of John Lautenschlager late husband of Nancy A. Lautenschlager and were present at his funeral and saw him buried. He died on the 31st day of October 1898."
