John Beatty, Company "D" 41st Pennsylvania Infantry, mother Ann (Certificate # 37,651) On May 30, 1864 E. Ann Beatty of 1224 Bedford St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania aged 59 years old applied for a Mother's Pension. She states that she is the mother of John Beatty who was a Private in Company "D", 41st Pennsylvania Volunteers who volunteered in June of 1861 and died June 1862 "that while in the Service and Line of his duty he was killed at the Battle of Charles City X Roads on the day afore mentioned." Ann is the widow of Samuel; she married Samuel at County of Derry (could also be Werry) Ireland on Nov. 19, 1824. Samuel died at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on Feb. 2, 1863. William Chambers and Elizabeth Ferguson state that they are well acquainted with Esther Ann Beatty and know that she is still a widow. They state they attended the funeral of Samuel Beatty. C. J. Cahill, physician of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, states that he treated Samuel Beatty during his final illness and that Samuel died of Stomach Cancer and was unable to work for about three months before his death. Thomas Horn of Philadelphia, former Captain of Company "D" 41st Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers, states "the said Beatty got out of an ambulance to go into said action he being sick at the time."
