Robert Beattie, Hosp Corps Regiment USA, Spanish American War, Mother Jane Beattie (cert# 492470) In 1899 Jane Beattie, age 61 and a resident of Republic, Marquette Michigan file a "Dependent Mother's Pension." She states that she is the mother of Robert Beattie who was a Private in the Hospital Corps Regiment U. S. A. in the war with Spain and who died Feb. 21, 1899 from typhoid fever at Anniston, Alabama. Jane states "the right and proper way of spelling her surname if Beattie as that is the way that my name appears spelled in all accounts of marriages and deaths." She also states "I am the lawful and only mother of Robert Beattie soldier boy of 2nd Inf that I am still and have been a widow since the death of my husband Walter Beattie, said Walter Beattie died on the 5th day of April a. d. 1897." In 1899 Adam Beattie, aged 46 years of Cleveland Ohio, states "applicant Jane Beattie is my mother. The soldier was my youngest brother and I know that he never married. .I was at my mother's house the day he was born which was sometime in August 1879. The claimant owns a house and lot in Republic, Marquette County, Michigan which is worth perhaps $500." Mrs. S. Jennie Brooks (25 years old), Mrs. Elizabeth Estrum (45 years old) of Republic, Michigan state that they have lived as neighbors to Jane Beattie for about 15 years and that they knew Robert sent his mother $20 per month "what was left after paying for his board in Cleveland Ohio." Dr. E. E. Lamb of Republic Michigan, who attended Walter during his last sickness confirms his date of death. Jane Beattie states in 1899 "said soldier was born in Ontario, Canada in the county of Gray on the 8th day of August 1879 and that he was at his death 19 years 4 months and 18 days old and that at the time of his enlisting he was learning the trade of carpentry and resided in the city of Cleveland, Ohio. He was at the time of enlisting in the 2nd US Inf a healthy and robust appearance of light complexion, light blue eyes light brown color of hair and to my knowledge he had no permanent mark nor scars of any kind. My family consisted of the following Adam son 44 years old and married Walter son 34 don't know whether said Walter is dead or living Mary Wallace 32 daughter married Amy Rodda 30 daughter married Maggie 28 daughter unmarried James Stewart 26 single Hugh 24 single son."
