Archibald C. Beattie Company "C" Illinois Infantry, War with Spain; father William M. Beattie (certificate # 495,990) April 15, 1899-William M. Beattie files a declaration for Dependent Father's Pension; he is 68 years old and a resident of Cook County, Illinois. William's son Archibald C. Beattie enlisted at Chicago, Illinois on June 18, 1898 in Company "C" 1st Illinois Infantry Volunteers in the War with Spain and he died at Siboney, Cuba on August 4, 1898 of yellow fever. William M. Beatty married the soldier's mother on October 22, 1858 in Montreal, Canada and she died Jan. 6, 1886 at Minneapolis, Minnesota. Gertrude H. Beattie and Harry L. Butler at witnesses to the identity of the claimant. There is a certified copy of William's marriage certificate in the file. It states that "William Morrison Beattie, of Montreal, bachelor, and Mary Harkin, spinster, were married by me with License, this twenty second day of October in the year of Our Lord One thousand eight hundred and fifty eight, in presence of these witnesses, and have signed. Beattie at the birth of Archibald C. Beattie on June 21, 1873, at Ottawa, Canada. Said child was the son of William M. Beattie." (signed June 6, 1899) A death record of Mary E. Beattie is contained in the file. It is a form from the Office of Board of Health, City Hall, Minneapolis Minn. Mary's date of death is given as Jan. 6, 1886, her age at death was 52. Her place of birth was Ireland. She was interred at Laymans Cemetery. William M. Beattie states "Archibald Cameron Beattie was born June 21, 1873 died August 4-1898 at Siboney, Cuba --when last measured by his father (three years ago) was 5 feet 7 3/4 inches. The preliminary color of his eyes was blue -when closely examined traces of brown radiated from the right. He was of fair complexion inclined to be ruddy. His hair was dark brown. He sent me his Bible and photograph taken of himself a short time previously to his death. Also: "I live with and am supported by my married son Richard Beattie." In 1900 William M.
