James L. Beatie, Civil War Pension filed by mother, Elizabeth Beatie (Mothers Certificate # 125,200). James L. Beatie was a Private in Company H 123, NY Volunteers. He enrolled on Aug. 21, 1861 at Salem New York. He was killed while on Picket before Atlanta, Georgia, Aug. 18, 1864. On the 23rd of Nov. 1864 in Washington County, New York, Elizabeth Beattie a resident of Salem, New York and aged 60 years stated that she is the widow of Thomas Beattie and mother of James L. Beattie. She states that she married Thomas at Sandgate, Vermont on the 28th of Oct. 1824. Thomas died on Jan. 24, 1857. Grace Beattie and Robert Beattie of Salem, Washington County, New York: Grace Beattie for her self deposes and says that she knows Elizabeth Beattie the mother of James L. Beattie, deceased, a private in Company H in the 123rd Regiment New York Volunteers. That said James was in the habit of letting his mother have money from time to time as she wanted. Deponent has heard him tell his said mother that he would always let her have money if she wanted if she wanted money to let him know, and she should have it .After his enlistment and before he left town Deponent heard said James tell his mother not to worry, that if he lived to get back he would provide a home for her where they would live together. And this deponent Robert Beattie for himself deposes and says that from an intimate knowledge of the affairs of the said James and his said mother he ahs a general knowledge of the fact that the said James was in the habit both before his enlistment and afterwards of giving her money. Robert Beattie and Nancy M. Beattie appear as witnesses to the identity of Elizabeth on Dec. 8, 1888 in Washington County, New York. elizabeth asks for her pension to be transfered from the Indianapolis Pension Agency to New York.
