    3. Horace L. Beatty, Private in Co "I" 10th Indiana Cavalry, Civil War; mother Ann M. Beatty (certificate # 142,027) In 1866 Ann M. Beatty, aged 43 and a resident of Monroe, County Indiana applies for a Mother's Army Pension. She states that she is the widow of James M. Beatty who died on May 9, 1863 and the mother of Horace Beatty, who enlisted at Bloomington, Indiana in 1863 in Company "I" 10th Indiana Cavalry and died of sickness in a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida June 3, 1865. In 1867 John Walker and Jackson Misner state that they were acquainted with James M. Beatty the father of said Horace Beatty and know that he died previous to his said sons death viz on the 9th day May 1863. They also state that she is incapable of earning her subsistence by reason of "her age being forty four years old and having four girls from six to fourteen years old and an invalid son twenty seven years old who is entirely helpless and dependent on his mother, being idiotic." There is a letter in the file dated Jan. 19, 1934 from Esther H. Beatty, 921 E. 36th Street, Indianapolis, Indiana: Dear Sir, Will you kindly give me data concerning the Civil War pension claim of Horace L. Beatty, Monroe, County, Bloomington, Indiana. I believe he was supposed to have died of starvation at Andersonville, Fla. Prison. Does the information that you have tell where he is buried? Thanking you for anything you can tell me.
