Peter Beattie, Civil War, Mother Janet (application # 234,927) In January of 1878 Janet Beattie, aged eighty four and a resident of the Township of Westminster, Middlesex County, Province of Ontario appeared before the US Consulate in the city of London to apply for a Mother's Army Pension. She states that she was the mother of Peter Beattie who was a Private in Company "L", commanded by Captain Bouton in the 2nd Regiment of Artillery, Volunteers of Illinois in the "war of 1861." She states that Peter died at Vicksburgh Mississippi in March of 1863 of "Camp Fever." David and William Beattie are witnesses to her signature (by mark). In an affidavit dated January 4, 1878 Janet states "said Peter Beattie contributed regularly to his mothers support by his labor on the farm, that he was one of a family of fifteen, that his brothers (and sisters) were all married and had their own families to support -with the exception of one brother who was unable to render help, that the said Peter Beattie contributed with his brothers to the support of their mother & that they were all in poor circumstances." William Beattie, Janet's husband, died on August 12, 1864 in Westminster, Ontario. Janet lives with her son David and his family on a 100 acre farm but has no right or title to this farm. A letter, dated June 4, 1892, to the Postmaster at Wilton Grove, Ontario from the Bureau of Pensions asking for the last known post office address has a hand written note on the reverse: "Peter Beattie's mother is dead {Janet Beattie} & her son David is on the place his P. O. is Wilton farm." Laurel Baty, L252
