(PO Harlem Springs) Ohio, 1884, Harlem Springs, Carroll Co., Ohio; died May 6, 1886 Deed in file is dated March 4, 1822 "This indenture made this fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand Eight Hundred and twenty two between Thomas Beatty & Rachel his wife of the County of Harrison & State of Ohio of the one part and William McElroy of the County of Jefferson and State of Virginia of the other part..the following described part of Lott of Land.lying and being in the County of Jefferson and State of Virginia and Lying and being on the Main Streete in Charlestown. Witnesses are John Nixon, Anthony Cummings and William Beatty. In 1855 Thomas Beatty of Brooke County, Virginia applies for Bounty Land. In a letter about this warrant written in 1878 by Rachel's lawyer "she can not give the # of warrant - says her son William Beatty got the land warrant, and traded it to Wesley Grey or Gray of Steubenville, Ohio." In April 1878 Rachel Beatty aged 80 years and a resident of Carroll County, Ohio files a "War of 1812, Claim for Widow for Service Pension." She states that Thomas Beatty volunteered at Leesburgh, Virginia. At the time of enlistment he was 21 years old, his place of birth was Charlestown, Virginia, height 5 feet, 10 inches, eyes blue, hair light, complexion fair. She states she was married on Feb. 15, 1816 in Loudon, Va. and her maiden name was Cummings (there is a certified copy of the marriage in the file dated 1878, which states that a marriage license was issued on April 3, 1878). Thomas Beaty died at Harlem, Ohio on January 13, 1871. Since the time of her husband's enlistment they have resided at Virginia for two years, Ohio 18 years, West Virginia 28 years and Ohio 14 years. Thomas Telfer and Martha J. Telfer identify Rachel in this document. Martha J. T Telfer states "she is the legal custodian of the family Bible of said decedent, which family Bible bears date 1817 and was printed and published by M. Carey & son of 126 Chestnut Street Philadelphia, Pa as appears of record on the first page of said book and she says that the record of the marriages and births recorded in said book is in the hand writing of Thomas Beatty deceased and among other records therein contained is the following to wit "Thomas Beatty and Rachel Beatty his wife was married the 15th day of Feb. 181" and affiant further says that the record is mutilated in this that the right hand figure of the date of said marriage has been punched out, and she says that when small she and her sister mutilated said date whilst playing with said book." Mary E. Morehead, aged 51, states that she attended Thomas' funeral. In November of 1878 in Carroll County, Ohio, John W. Benedum, aged 55, states that he has known Thomas and Rachel Beaty for 35 years and that "Thomas Beatty died about the year 1871." Mary Benedum, also of Carroll County, aged 82 years states "she was present and an eye witness at the solemnization of the marriage contract between Thomas Beatty and Rachel Cummings and that said parties were married in Loudon Co., Va. about the year 1816.she lived neighbor to them in Virginia, and she and them moved to Carroll Co., Ohio near the same time, and her acquaintance has been intimate, having been intimate friends for more than 60 years.said parties Thomas Beatty and wife reared and raised a large family of children." Happy Trails & Happy Holidays to you & your family, Take care, cousin Kim...still digging away. . before I forget- think I might have found the Martha Ralston who married to Abraham Morehead in Brooke 1841 in Carroll Co OH in the 1850 census in Carroll Co - she died in 1860 before the census & she is buried at the Morehead cemetery in Lee twp, Carroll Co OH with several small kids who all died young, some only lived to age 12. I think this is the same Abraham; This Abraham might have remarried to a Mary Ellen Beaty in 1861? He is listed with her in the 1870 census there. I'm thinking this Martha might have been the Martha that was a daughter of Samuel & Martha Tucker- still checking on it. but She didn't name any kids Samuel? >From the info at the Morehead cemetery listings, all listed as children of A & M Morehead, Mary b. 1842 d. 1854 age 12, - (was 8 in 1850 census) Nancy b. abt 1844 (est from census age on these kids) Andrew b. 1848 another Mary b. 1856 (was 4 in 1860 census) Eleanor b. 1846 d. 1849 age 3 Milard son of A& M b. 1849 d. 1861 age 12 6 m 6 days Joseph b. 1854 d. Lee Township, Carroll County, has a just right to feel proud of her native-born stalwart sons of the soil, who in their lifetime have done so much toward making the fair land "blosson as the rose", and among the names most deserving of perpetuation in this work is that of Abraham Morehead. Mr. Morehead was born January 5, 1817, a son of Thomas and Mary Hill Morehead. {See sketch of James Morehead.} His boyhood days were passed on the farm and in the school-room, alternately, according to the season of the year, the greater part of his time, however, being occupied in receiving practical lessons in husbandry. At his death he was the owner of 300 acres of well-improved land in Lee Township, all the result of his industry, economy, perserverance and progressiveness. In 1841 he was married to Martha Rawlson, who bore him the following named children: Mary, Nancy, Ellen, Andrew, Joseph, Willard and Annie. This wife dying Mr. Morehead took for his second wife, Mary, daughter of Thomas Beatty, and to this union have been born two children, viz: Dillie and Abraham. Mr. Morehead departed this life in 1890, a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church at Harlem Springs, which church his family also attend; in politics he was a supporter of the Democratic party. Thomas Beatty, father of Mrs. Morehead, was a native of Virginia, born in Loudoun County in 1810. His early life was spent on the homefarm of his parents, and while yet a young man he married Rachel Cummungs, who bore him ten children, namely, respectively, Lucinda, Nancy, William, Albert, Mary, Elizabeth, Josiah, Martina, Martha J. and Sarah. Mr. Beatty in religion was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church and in his political convictions was a stanch Democrat.
