Willis Baty, "I" 10 U. S. C. T.; widow Jane, Murfreesboro Tennessee (application # 499,836) In July of 1890 Willis Baty, aged 62 of Rutherford County, Tennessee states that he enrolled as a Private on January 6, 1864 in Company "I" of the 10th Regiment of U. S. Colored Troops, commanded by Captain Dudley and was discharged at Nashville on April 30, 1866. A letter in the file from S. Jerome Smith of Murfreesboro, Tennessee states that Willis died "Sunday night Aug. 2, 1890 of rheumatism of the heart and a jury of inquest was held to determine the cause of death." Willis left a widow and two children . Jane Baty, aged 65 of Rutherford County Tennessee applied for a widow's pension on August 18, 1890. She states that her maiden name was Boyd and she was married to Willis on September 25, 189 (sic) A certified record from Rutherford County, Tennessee states that a marriage license was issued on Sept. 25, three miles from town, 1883 and the "rites of matrimony were solemnized between said parties on the 26th day of Sept. 1883." An affidavit by Ciddy Smith, age 35 and Mariah Russell aged 25 states "When her husband died he had to be buried by the corporation of the city of Murfreesboro, he died in the 4th ward of this city. We lives near her and have good opportunity of knowing how she make her living, her husband Willis Baty was so poor that they were unable to get a Doctor to attend him before he died, he had very bad pain around his heart, his breath was short..before he moved to Murfreesboro he lived at Rev. Dr. Fleming Hall on the Franklin Dirt Road.he lived at Dr. Hall farm three years and before that he lived at Mr. Bcd (?)
