Descendant of Sergt. James Smith, of Connecticut. Daughter of Richard Coit Elliott (1838-1905) and Fannie Mudge (1845-1907), his wife, m. 1864. Granddaughter of Euclid Elliott (1798-1846) and Lucy Smith Coit (1801-83), his wife, m. 1822. Gr-granddaughter of John Coit (1767-1853) and Lucy Smith (1770-1808), his wife, m. 1789. Gr-gr-granddaughter of James Smith and Abigail Hempstead (1739-1814), his wife, m. 1756. James Smith (1732-98) enlisted, 1775, as sergeant in Capt. James Chapman's company, 6th Connecticut regiment, under Col. Samuel Holden Parsons. He was born and died in New London. Beatty (d. 1849), his wife, m. 1811. Gr-gr-granddaughter of Gabriel Friday and — Geiger, his wife, m. 1774. Gabriel Friday (1752-1830) enlisted, 1780, as private under General Sumter and later as captain in Sumter's State troops. He was born and died in Saxe Gotha, S. Gr-granddaughter of James Beatty McKinley and Elizabeth McCurdy, his wife. Gr-gr-granddaughter of William McKinley and Mary Beatty, his wife. William McKinley (1744-98) served with the Virginia troops. He was at Yorktown when Cornwallis surrendered. He died in Abbeville, S. C.
