Thomas Collins (1729-96) was a Whig, of Spartanburg County, and while ill in bed was attacked by the bloody Bill Cunningham with his band of Tories. His three sons, John, William, and Richard, were in the army, and when he refused to tell where they were the Tories hacked him with their swords, leaving him for dead. Also No. 12260. Thomas James (1755-79) volunteered in a regiment of Virginia troops which went to South Carolina, and was killed at the battle of Stono, 1779. He was born in Virginia. William Austin (1755-1840) was a daring scout and was engaged in the battles of Gilford Court House, Musgrove Mills and Kettle Creek. He was born in Virginia; died in Greenville, S. Mathew McCoy's company, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania militia.
