    3. >From "Monongalia County, (West) Virginia: Records of the District, Superior and County Courts, Volume 1: 1776 -- 1799" by Melba Pender Zinn, Heritage Books, 1990 (This is a multiple volume series--I think there were at least 11 volumes and there seemed to a lot of Beatys, and also Shumans for L6 in some of the later volumes. I only did a few volumes, not being at all familiar with the research that has been done in this county) Page 14 1c -- 1788, District Court, Monongalia County. Pre-emption Treasury Warrant #2044, on original parchment, to Jeremiah Simpson, assignee of __Ramsey, assignee of William Morgan, dated 14 March 1782 for 200 acres surveyed on 15 March 1786 in Monongalia County adjoining John Green, said Simpson, ROBERT BEATY and Robert Bennett dated 8 July 1788. On reverse, "I do hereby certify that Sam'l Crane has bought the within tract of land," signed Jer'm Simpson. Page 28 7 - 1791, District Court, Monongalia County. From Ohio County Court, June 1791. WILLIAM BEATY confined to the gaol of said county on a charge of "feloniously steeling from George Coughan (later Cogran) a purse of money of forty guinies, three halfjoes and six french crowns." An Appearance Bond in the amount of 81 pounds and 10 shillings of Pennsylvania money was filed and George and William McCorkhill and John Churchill to give evidence at next term of court in behalf of the Commonwealth. William Boggs summoned to testify in behalf of THOMAS BEATY, 11 August 1791. To the sheriff of Ohio County and to the District Jailer at Morgan Town in Monongalia County: "whereas at a court held by the Commonwealth in Ohio County, 20 June 1791, for the examination of WILLIAM BEATY, late of Pennsylvania, then a Prisoner in the said Ohio County jail on charges as aforesaid, it being determined that said BEATY stand trial and be removed to the district jail at Morgan Town, Monongalia County." John Churchill made oath that about 17 June 1791 he was coming up the Ohio River in the company of WILLIAM BEATY and several other men. They stopped with the boat at a small distance below the mouth of Muskingham River on the western side and after securing the boat said BEATY went on shore an sometime later that night came on board and woke said Churchill and asked him who was lying in the stern of the boat and Churchill replied "No one except George McCorkhill" and said BEATY went and laid down beside said George McCorkhill and put his hand in his pocket and then and there took a purse with money in it and got up and went out of the boat and this despondent followed the said BEATY and "saw him empty the purse into his hand and his hand into his pocket and drop the purse on the ground and cover it with land", 20 June 1791. George McCorkhill's deposition dated 20 June 1791 tells a like story adding that the said BEATY alleged that he had taken the purse as a prank and had hid the money near old McMasham's fence, and the despondent further added that said BEATY offered him 12 pounds to say nothing of the affair. Said BEATY was delivered to the district jail at Morgan Town, 27 June 1791. William Bragg summoned to testify in behalf of said BEATY and the jurors were: Morgan Hunt, James Beard Turner, Danial and John Morgan, James Moor, Nathaniel Coalman, George Der__?, Morgan Vanmeter, John Beckey, John Humphries, Charles Dills, and John Dates.
