The claim was barred, which means that the application was never completed. This file contains the Will of William H. Batte. The amount of the claim was for $31,200.00 for buildings, cotton, forage and meat destroyed in the late Civil war. There is a list of destroyed property in the claim which includes $100.00 worth of books taken off, a carriage destroyed, all my wearing clothes and that of wife & 6 children, towels, table clothes carried off valued at $300.00. The most expensive claim was for 110 bales of cotton worth $24,750.00 burned in buildings destroyed by United States Army Commanded by General Sherman by command of said General Sherman in his presence under the protest and against the clear remonstrance of the owner in the year AD 1864 An excerpt: The petition of William Hobbs Batte a loyal citizen of the United States & a resident of Rankin County near to Brandon in the State of Mississippi respectfully showeth that he is now 62 years of age and that he is and ever has been a true & loyal citizen of the United States and that he was in no way engaged in the late rebellion against the United States but opposed said rebellion by every means possible and that he was never in the Rebel Army Wm H. Battes will is contained in the file and is 5 pages long and rather complex. Named in will: Wife, Anna E. Batte Our Daughters Sarah W. Batte and Anna H.
