John Beatty, Company "D" 68th NY Infantry, mother Mary Beatty (Certificate # 187,660) On May 21, 1879 Mary Beatty, aged 80 and a resident of Malone, Franklin County, New York applied for a Dependant Mother's Pension. She is the widow of Thomas Beatty "who died about twenty years since at Rouses Point New York and the mother of John Beatty who enlisted under the name of John Beatty at Malone aforesaid on the 28th day of July 1863 in Co. "D" in the 68th Regiment of New York Volunteers in the war of the Rebellion and was honorably discharged at Fort Pulaski, Georgia, November 30, 1865 having previously and on the tenth day of February 1857 enlisted and served as corporal in Capt. Frank Wheaton's Co. B of the Fourth Regiment of U. S. cavalry and was honorably discharged at Jefferson City February twelfth 1862, with "character Good" and who died at Malone in said county on the 4th day of December 1869 in consequence of diarrhea of malarial origin." In June of 1874, James Beatty aged 44 and Robert Whyte aged 48 have reside in Malone for 20 years and they have known Mary Beatty for 40 and 25 years respectively. They both confirm the date of death of Thomas Beatty. In April of 1880 George Sabin and Patrick Shields both of Malone state that John Beatty" supported his mother Mary Beatty during that time [1866 until his death] that he purchased and paid for family supplies during that time that they were merchants and proprietors of a Grocery and Provision store in Malone Village from May 1866 to 1872, that from June 1866 to Sept. 1868 the said John Beatty made frequent purchases at our store." They further state "that on or about the year 1868 we sold a small house to said John Beatty and that he lived with his mother in that house at the time of his last sickness and death, that he was a man who cared for his mother and upon whom she was utterly dependent for her support."
