Roy C. Converse, Co. "M" 52nd Iowa Infantry, War with Spain, mother Cora Beattie (application # 843,289) On January 9th 1906 Cora Beattie, aged 48 and a resident of Plymouth County, Iowa filed a claim for a Mother's pension. Cora Beattie is the mother of Roy C. Converse who enlisted March 24, 1898 at Des Moines Iowa in Company "M" U. S. Infantry in the War with Spain and who died August 6, 1898 of typhoid fever at Luter Hospital, Lytle, Georgia. Cora Beattie married the father of Roy Converse on Nov. 27, 1878 in Hopkinton, Mass. Cora states that she married John F. Beattie Sept. 29, 1894 in Sioux City, Iowa. Rosabelle Beattie, aged 17 and Mae Beattie aged 16 live with her. Cora states that she has two sons, Ray Converse aged 25 years and Walter Converse aged 21 years and both live in Massachusetts. Cora states that "the correct name of the soldier is Roy Charles Converse.his twin brother Ray ? Converse was in the regular army and is now living in Worchester, Mass. Anna B. Wakefield, aged 66 and a resident of Cherokee Iowa states that Roy "was born at Keene, New Hampshire on September 15, 1881, that I am his grandmother and was present at the time of his birth." A certified copy of the Marriage certificate of John Beattie and Mrs. C. E. converse is in the file. John F. Beattie, aged 45, states "he is the husband of the above claimant that he is in the employment of the Plymouth Milling Company and that his earnings from all sources since Jan 16th 1906 have been Two hundred & twenty five dollars.
