    3. [I think this is one of the nicest Bounty Land applications that I have seen--I copied the whole thing and excerpted a large portion of it here.--L. Baty, L252] Declaration of a Widow in order to obtain Bounty Land State of New Jersey County of Mercer On this 28th day of October one thousand eight hundred and fifty eight personally appeared before me , a Commissioner of deeds & Notary Public within and for the County and State aforesaid widow Ann or Nancy Beatty aged sixty-three years, a resident of the City of Trenton in said State, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of John Beatty deceased, who served in the United States Naval or Sea Service in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June 1812. That her said husband, John Beatty, informed her that he enlisted at Philadelphia in the fall of the year 1812, and was drafted to serve on board the United States Schooner of War the "Snapper" (commanded to the best of her recollection) by Captain Green which U. S. Schooner of war was captured by a British vessel of War. She further states that she is informed by Steward Beatty an aged man, Brother to her said husband, that afterwards her said husband served on board of the U. S. ship of War "York-town" commanded by Capt. Ricker, but she thinks her husband said was commanded by Captain Story: which U. S. Ship of War, was captured by a British Vessel of War, and sent into Halifax, from thence her said husband with other Prisoners of war, were sent to England, and confined in Dartmoor Prison; and there remained until the exchange of prisoners took place, when he returned to Trenton N. J.-That her said husband John Beatty was born in Hunterdon County, N. J. and at the time of his enlistment was about twenty two years of age, dark blue eyes, black hair about 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high and by trade a House Carpenter-she further states that she was married to the said John Beatty at Trenton New Jersey on the 29th day of June 1815 by the Rev Thomas Dunn, a Methodist Minister, of Trenton that her name before her said marriage was Ann or Nancy Edmunds-that her said husband died at Wooster Street in the City of new York on the fifteenth of August 1832. That said Revd Thomas Dunn is dead & that no public or private record exists to her knowledge of her said marriage. That Stewart Beatty, Hannah Noble, Mrs. Sarah Jones & Mrs. Charity Howell are now living, who were present at her said marriage, that they know and can testify that she was married as she has afore stated, and that she is now a widow. Trenton, New Jersey October 29th 1858 Hon Geo C. Whiting Sir, Yours of 25th enclosing samples (?) of forms, I have rec. for which please accept my thanks, enclosed is the application of Widow Ann or Nancy Beatty, widow of John Beatty who it is reputed in this city, served in the Sea Service in the War of 1812-was confined as an United States Prisoner, in Dartmoor Prison as it has ever been said among his relatives and friends. I have been acquainted with them from my infancy, they are a Revolutionary family. Mrs. Beatty was the daughter of Jacob Edmunds a Revolutionary pensioner, under the old act, or act of 1818 and her husband John Beatty, was the son of John Beatty an invalid pensioner who died in 1826(?), whose father was Major Beatty of the Revolution. Her eldest son was Henry Beatty, he enlisted & went in the Florida war & is supposed was killed by the Indians as he never returned home, nor was heard from by his mother. You will observe that they have been a Patriotic family, ever ready to enlist & defend their country in the hour of need and trial. When her husband died she was left with 7 children, the eldest Henry became a soldier, five little girls & her youngest son was an infant at the time of the death of her husband-she is very poor & has nearly lost her eye sight. I humbly hope she will receive some compensation from Government. Very Respectfully, Sarah Smith Stafford
