A cautionary note - I once came across some papers naming someone as a man's "attorney" only to find out later that it was a son-in-law, a miller by trade, who was given a "power of attorney" over some aspect of the man's business, in this case, for going out west and selecting the land the man had been awarded by bounty. I would look for a family connection to this Sarah Smith Stafford... --- Laurel Baty <laurelbaty@comcast.net> wrote: > The Lady who wrote the letter, Sarah Smith > Stafford, was Ann Beatty's > attorney. Good point--which would actually make it more interesting (after all, Nancy had "five little girls"). There is a Mary E. Strafford who witnesses Nancy Beatty's signature and also an H. M. Laird. However, there is also a Samuel B. Stafford who is a "Commissioner of Deeds & Notary Public."
