Batey, Jr., Private Company "A" 120th Illinois Infantry, mother Malinda (application #26,991) [I thought I would transcribe this printed application completely to give everyone an idea of exactly what is on these applications.] Mother's Declaration For Army Pension State of Illinois Pope County On this 20th day of June A. D. 1863 before me John Ramm Clerk of the County Court, in and for the County and State above named, personally appeared Mrs. Malinda Batey age 54 years, a resident of Pope County in the State of Illinois who being duly sworn according to law, doth on her oath make the following declaration: That she is the widow of George W. Batey, Sr. and the mother of George W. Batey Jr. who was a Private in Company A commanded by Captain John M. Ramm in the 120 Regiment of Illinois Infantry Volunteers in the war of 1861 and who died at Camp Butler on or about the 20th day of October 1862 by reason of pneumonia Fever and she further states that she was lawfully married to the said George W. Batey Sr., father of the said George W. Batey Jr. on or about the 14th day of August 1823 by one Thomas Loudon a J. P. & there is a record evidence of the same in the Office of the County Clerk of said County & her name then was Malinda Hazel [a copy of this marriage record is in the file]. She further declares that her said son, upon whom she was in part dependant for support, having left no widow or minor child under sixteen years of age surviving declarant makes this application for a pension, under the act of Congress approved July 14, 1862, and refers to the evidence filed herewith, and that in the proper department to establish her claim. She also declares that she has not in any way been engaged in or aided or abetted the rebellion in the United States, that she is not in receipt of a pension under the second section of the act above mentioned, or under any other act, and that she has not married since the death of her son the soldier above named. She hereby constitutes and appoints John Wertz of Golconda (?), Ills., her Attorneys, with power of substitution to prosecute her claim and procure a certificate, with full power and authority to do and perform all and every lawful act and thing whatsoever necessary and requisite to be done in and about the premises, except drawing the money, which will be hereafter provided for. Malinda Batey (Her Mark) Sworn to, subscribed and acknowledged before me, the day and year first above written; and also, personally appeared Isaac H. Hazel a resident of Pope County, Illinois and Henry L. Dickson a resident of Pope County, Illinois persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, who being duly sworn according to law, declare that they are personally acquainted with Mrs. Malinda Batey who has made and subscribed the foregoing declaration in their presence, and were personally acquainted with her and her son before he entered the military service of the United States. That her son the said George W. Batey Jr. was the person who served as stated in said declaration. That from their knowledge of and acquaintance with the family of the declarant and her son, the soldier above named, they know that he left surviving no widow or children under sixteen years of age; that she was in part dependant upon him for support, and that she was the wife and is now the widow of George W. Batey, Sr. and has been a widow since the death of her said son. That they reside as above stated and have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. Isaac H. Hazel Henry L.
