This is L-365 Donna L-3 WILLIAM WORK BEATTY, farmer, Sec. 24 and 25; P. O. Elvira. He owns 170 acres of land. He was born in Crawford Co., Penn., Oct. 29, 1811; was educated there. In May, 1846, he removed and located in Kane Co., Ill., where he remained until the spring of 1852, when he removed to Clinton Co., Center Township, where he now resides. He held for several years the offices of Justice of the Peace, Township Clerk, Township School Director and Road Supervisor. He was very active in the war of the rebellion, and sent four sons to battle for their country, one of whom was killed at the battle of Peach Tree Creek. He married Eleanor H. Stuart, in Crawford Co., Penn., on the 24th day of September, 1833, and have twelve children-Finlaw, John S., Montelius Murry, Joseph Henry, William Emmett, Mary Ann S., Rebecca J., Annis M., Hattie E., Emma I., Carrie F., Eva Ella. He and most of his family are members of the United Presbyterian Church of Elvira. When he arrived in the West, he had the sum of 25 cents to begin life with; and, as the fruits of industry and economy, he has now a beautiful residence finely improved, and a fortune variously estimated at from $25,000 to $50,000. Notes for FINLAW BEATTY: Member of GAR Finlaw Beatty, Company "A" 16th Iowa Infantry, widow Rhoda Beatty (Certificate # 45,628) Guardian Rhoda Eckles, (minor's certificate # 153,417) On October 25, 1864 Rhoda Beatty, aged 24 and a resident of Lyons, Clinton County, Iowa filed a Widow's Declaration for Pension. She is the widow of Finlaw Beatty who was a Sergeant in Company "A" commanded by Captain Smith of the 16th Iowa Infantry in the "War with the Confederate States." Finlaw Beatty was "killed at battle of Peachtree Creek Georgia" on or about July 21, 1864. A copy of the marriage certificate of Rhoda Warren and Finlaw Beatty shows that they were married on October 15, 1856 at La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin by William Card, a Baptist Minister. Finlaw had one surviving child at his death, Evaline P. Beatty, aged seven years October 24, 1864 (born October 24, 1857.) William W. Beatty and Robert S. Campbell are witnesses to Rhoda Beatty's application. William Beatty further declares "said William W. Beatty is father of said Finlaw & knows him from his birth and has known said declarant for fourteen years." On September 28, 1866 Rhoda Beatty files a claim for increase in Pension. She is now residing in New Hartford, Winona County, Minnesota. M. L. Tibbetts and Eliza M. Tibetts witness Rhoda Beatty's signature and claim that they have known her and Finlaw Beatty for ten years. On February 12, 1867 Warrhum W. Warren and Martha M. Warren residents of Olmsted County, Minnesota state "in the autumn of the year 1857 these deponents resided at the village of Dresbach in the County of Winona Minnesota and that they were at that time well acquainted with Finlaw Beattey and Rhoda Beattey his wife who in the month of October 1857 also resided in said village of Dresbach in said county of Winona Minnesota that on the 24th day of October 1857 these deponents were called to the house of said Finlaw Beattey in said village of Dresbach that the said Rhoda Beattey at that time gave birth to a female child who was afterwards named Eveline P. Beattey." On June 27, 1871 Rhoda B. Eckles, aged 29 and a resident of Olmsted County, Minnesota filed a claim for Pension as guardian of a minor child. She states that she married William Eckles on July 13, 1870. A copy of the marriage certificate shows that they were married in Olmsted County, Minnesota by M. L. "Old Man" Beatty (MONTILLUS [MONTILLIAN)] MURRAY BEATTY), for whom Beatty is named, was a native of Iowa; he enlisted in the Union Army at Lyons, Iowa, on 6 May 1861, and served in Company I, Second Iowa Infantry Regiment. He was discharged because of disability and came west after the Civil War. Beatty married a full blooded Paiute woman and they had at least three children, Maud, Frank and Monte. He was Beatty's first postmaster when the post office opened 19 January 1905, although he could neither read nor write, except for his name. He dabbled in mining until his death in December 1908.
