William N. Beaty, Company "G" 1st Colorado Infantry, War with Spain; mother Sarah (certificate # 610,597) On March 7, 1899 William N. Beaty, aged 25 years and a resident of Aspen, Pitkins County, Colorado filed an Invalid claim for pension. He states that he enlisted May 1, 1898 as a private in Company "G" 1st Colorado Infantry in the War with Spain and was discharged at Manila October 10, 1898 after "sunstroke resulting in total disability." There is a Certificate of Disability for Discharge in this file which shows that William was born in Jackson County, Kansas and 25 years old when he enlisted. He had a light complexion, blue eyes and light hair and was 5 feet 9 ¼ inches tall. He was a minor by occupation. The form lists his disability as "On Oct. 9, 1898 W. N. Beaty fainted while on dress parade and was sent to division Hospital on Oct. 11, 1898, twice before this date, while on duty, said Beaty had fainted, when exposed to the sun." On August 15, 1903 Sarah Beaty, aged 66 a resident of Cripple Creek, Colorado filed a claim for a Mother's Pension. She states that she is the mother of William N. Beaty who died at Pueblo, Colorado "from apoplexy caused by sunstroke" on the 25th day of April 1903. Sarah married William Beaty, father of William N. Beaty, at Florence Indiana on March 5, 1856. Her husband died at Aspen, Colorado on April 7, 1895 (aged 64 years). Sarah lists the members of her family in 1903: Mrs. Alice Roach, age 38, daughter; Ira C. Beaty, age 33, son; B. J. Beaty, age 27, son; Edward E. Beaty, aged 23, son. Sarah lists the following property as her only asset "a house and five lots K. L. M.
