    3. Joseph Beatty, Company "H" 174th Ohio Infantry, widow Mary J. Beatty (application # 441,715) John Burk Guardian (minor's certificate 379,915) On July 16, 1890 Mary J. Beatty, aged 38 and a resident of Bellaire, Belmont County, Ohio filed a Declaration For Widow's Pension. Mary is the widow of Joseph Beatty who enlisted August 10, 1864 in Company "H" 174th Regiment of Ohio Infantry and who died August 19, 1886. Mary J. McCoy was married to Joseph Beatty on January 29, 1873 by Father Style of Bellair, Ohio. The following children survived Joseph at his death: John W. born Dec 15, 1875; Joseph H. born March 6, 1878; Claude A. born March 1, 1880; Mary B. born June 1, 1885. A statement from Rev. Fitzgerald, rector of St. John's Church in Bellaire, Ohio affirms the date of marriage and birth dates and baptism of the children. Mary J. Beatty died October 18, 1890 and John Burke was appointed Guardian of the minor children of Joseph and Mary Beatty. He filed a claim for pension on their behalf on October 29, 1890. A copy of a Family Bible is presented in Court as proof of their birth dates: "I have examined the family bible of J. & M. J. Beatty, published by Wm Flint & Co. Philadelphia, Pa - Cincinnati, Ohio and Springfield, Mass. - 1873, and find that the following entries appear verbatim to be genuine - John William Beatty was born December 15, 1875 Joseph Henry Beatty was born March 6th 1878 Claude Albinuis Beatty, Born March 1st 1880 Mary Blanche Beatty born June 1st 1885" Alonzo Porterfield, aged 51 and a resident of Bellaire, Ohio states "upon examination of the official records of Spangler Post I find the following entry of Aug. 24, 1886. "Joseph Beaty died Aug. 19th 1886." Signed by Frank S. Mason adj. of Post for 1886. I declare the above to be an exact copy of minutes of that date. Signed A. Porterfield adj. Spangler Post #99 GAR Bellaire, Ohio." Pension is granted the children commencing Oct. 31, 1890 and continuing until they reach the age of 16. John W. Beatty is granted an extension of his Pension-he is declared a helpless child due to "Potts disease of the spine." He is dropped from the Pension rolls at his death on August 23, 1895. There is a Guardian's account for Mary B. Beatty for the year Sept. 1899 to Sept. 1900. She is residing in Columbus Ohio and $18.00 is paid quarterly to St. Vincent Orphans Asylum on her behalf for board, clothing & tuition.
