James Beatty, Co "F" 14th Michigan Infantry, mother Jane Kingston (application # 428,958) On the 22nd of July 1890 Jane Kingston aged 69 and a resident of Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan filed a claim for Dependent parents pension. She states that she is the mother of James Beatty who enlisted at Detroit, Michigan on March 25, 1864 in Company "F" 14th Regiment of Michigan Volunteers and who died at Chattanooga, Tenn. in the General Field hospital on July 19, 1864 from typhoid fever. She further states that she married the father of the soldier at "the north part of Ireland" on March 10, 1842 by Rev Mr. Clark and remarried to Sam'l Kingston Oct. 26, 1864 at Detroit. The father of the soldier died on August 21, 1852 at Philadelphia and her second husband died Sept. 13, 1897 at Detroit Michigan. In another form she lists the place of her first marriage as "New Stewart." On November 11, 1890, Alexander Long, aged 55 and a resident of Detroit states "I am acquainted with the Claimant named for about 45 years and I knew her first husband John Beatty the father of the above mentioned soldier. Claimant and her first husband emigrated immediately after their marriage in Ireland to America and lived in Philadelphia, Pa, as husband and wife till Mr. Beatty died in August 1852. I was present at the funeral. The afore mentioned soldier James Beatty, son of the claimant and John Beatty, was born in Philadelphia several years after her husbands death claimant moved to Detroit, Michigan and lived here ever since; her son, the soldier, was the only help for her, he supported his mother after the father 's death to the best of his ability and at the time of his enlistment he was the only support of his mother. Claimant re married again October 26th 1864 to Samuel Kingston, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Scott in his private house. I was one of the witnesses and the marriage party started from my house. Mr. Kingston died in 1887 and the claimant is now a widow again. I further state that I read letters, written by the soldiers lieutenant in which he states that claimant's son died in the hospital after a short service. I know these facts from personal knowledge through my acquaintance and having been a neighbor of hers for a great part of the above mentioned time. I know that the soldier was not married and therefore left neither widow nor minor children.." On November 14, 1890, Isabella Sloan of Center Square Pennsylvania states "I am a sister of Jane Kingston. Jane Kingston was married to John Beatty and they lived together as man & wife until the death of John Beatty, which occurred in Philadelphia Pa. Between thirty & forty years ago. James Beatty was a son of Jane Beatty, now Jane Kingston the claimant." A letter stamped April 18, 1892: 125 Howard St. Detroit Mich April 11, 92 Hon. John Wanemaker, Washington, D. C. Dear Sir, I write at the insistence of Mrs. Jane Kingston, an old lady and a member of my church, who seems to think that if you knew she was an applicant for a pension, she would have no trouble in getting it. I have suggested to her that you are too busy to look after such matters, but she seems so anxious for me to write you, that I take the liberty to comply. It seems that her son, who would now be her support, was a member of your Sunday School in Philadelphia on 22nd and South Sts. His name was James Beatty, and the mother seems to think that you cannot have forgotten her James. He went to the war, was wounded, and died in a hospital in Chattanooga Tenn. The mother remarried again, but her husband soon died. She is now without relatives in this country and with very limited means. Her pension claim, which has received no attention, is Jane Kingston, mother of James Beatty, late of Co. "F" 14th Regiment of Michigan Infantry and no. 429,958. This letter may at least suggest to you the confidence and esteem with which some of the poor whom you tried to help in years past hold you in remembrance. Yours Truly, Samuel Plantz Pastor Tabernacle M. E. Church, Detroit Jane's Claim is stamped Rejected and Abandoned.
