"That he is the identical person who was enrolled at Fort Snelling on the 15th day of July 1861 as a 1st Lieutenant in Co. H 2nd Minnesota Inft. in the service of the United States, in the Civil War, and was Honorably Discharged at Goldsborough So. Car. on the 30th day of March 1865. That he was not employed in the military or naval service of the United States otherwise than as stated above. That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height, 6 feet __inches; complexion fair; color of eyes, gray; color of hair, light; that his occupation was teacher; that he was born Nov. 5th, 1831 at Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. On form 3-489, dated March 22, 1915, John R. Beatty states that his Post Office at enlistment was Mankato, Minnesota. He was married to Laura E. Maxfield on Feb. 16, 1864 at Mankato, Minn. by Rev. B. Beatty was last paid at the rate of $30.00 per month to April 4, 1916; he was dropped from the pension rolls due to his death April 7, 1916. A copy of his death certificate is in the file. His full name was John Reid Beatty and he was 84 years, 5 months and 2 days old at his death. His father's name is shown as John G. Beatty and his mother as Isabella Walker; both parents were born in Pennsylvania. He was buried in Mankato, Minn. April 9, 1916. On October 26, 1916 Laura E. Beatty, aged 75 and a resident of Mankato, Blue Earth County, Minnesota, filed a claim for pension as the widow of John R. Beatty. Her maiden name was Laura E. Maxfield and she married John R. Beatty on February 16, 1864 in Mankato, Minnesota. A certified copy of her marriage record is in the file showing that George Maxfield, Wesly Maxfield and Andrew Hanna were witnesses to her marriage. Laura E.
