Civil War Pension of John G. Beatty; Independent Battery F Pennsylvania Light Artillery; Certificate # 747,152; filed Ohio On July 3, 1890 John G. Beatty, aged 63 and a resident of the Village of Columbiana, County of Columbiana, Ohio filed a declaration for Invalid Pension. He states he "enrolled on the 21st day of September, 1861 in Hampton's, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania Battery of Light Artillery" as a Sergeant. He was honorably discharged March 15, 1863 at Aquia Creek, Virginia. John Beatty states "During the fall of 1849 I removed from the city of Allegheny Pennsylvania to Penn Township ten miles North East of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where I remained until my enlistment in the aforesaid Battery on September 21, 1861. My occupation prior to enlistment was that of carpenter in the summer and teacher in the winter season. After my return home in March 1863 I resided in the city of Allegheny, Pennsylvania until the spring of 1873 when I came to this town Columbiana, Ohio where I have since remained and which is my present residence since my return home my occupation has been that of foreman carpenter and superintendent of large buildings until the year 1872 since which time I have been engaged in the reading and practice of law occasionally doing a day surveying of land. From my infancy until Aug. 29th 1862 at which time I received the injury at Second Bull Run battle in Virginia I enjoyed the best of health." A Certificate of Disability For Discharge is in the file, containing the following description of John G. Beatty: "he was born in Boston, Massachusetts, is 35 years of age, five feet nine inches high, light complexion, light eyes, dark hair, and by occupation when enlisted a carpenter." In a deposition dated June 11, 1877, Columbiana, Columbiana County, Ohio, John G. Beatty sates "I came from Aquia Creek to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania after my discharge and went to my sister's, Mary Jane Mahany 43 Jefferson St., Allegheny City (I was a widower at this time.)" On form 3-402, dated March 23, 1898, John G. Beatty states he is married and his wife's maiden name was Emma Anderson. He was married July 5, 1893 at Leavittsburgh, Trumbull County, Ohio. He was previously married to Rachel Reynolds, who died June 23, 1860 at Verona, Pennsylvania. He then married Mary Jane Goodfriend, widow, who died August 7, 1889 at Columbiana, Ohio. He has three children living: John H. Beatty born May 27, 1853; Mrs. Matilda Wilson born January 21, 1852; Stephen Marion Beatty born November 24, 1856. John G. Beatty was last paid at the rate of $12 to June 4, 1902.
