Civil War Pension of Silas Battey; Major 151 Illinois Infantry; Certificate # 615,694; widow Mercy Battey Application # 611,945 On October 2, 1889 Silas Battey, a resident of Bureau County, Illinois filed a declaration for an Original Invalid Pension. He "enrolled on the 25th day of February 1865 as a Major of the 151st regiment of Illinois Infty Vol and discharged at Columbus, Georgia on the 24th day of Jany 1866. That his personal description is as follows: Age 74 years; height 5 feet 11 inches; complexion fair; hair sandy; eyes blue." Since leaving the service he has resided at Bureau County, Illinois. Silas Battey was granted a pension for a disability of malarial poisoning July 6, 1891. On April 10, 1895 Mercy Battey, widow of Silas Battey filed an application for accrued pension. Silas Battey died March 14, 1895. Mercy Bennett was married to Silas Battey on November 9, 1833 at Foster, Rhode Island. On April 19, 1895 Cyrean Battey, aged 54 and Elmer E. Battey, aged 33 state "our father and mother Silas Battey and Mercy Bennett were married November 9th 1833 by James Burlingame at Warwick Rhode Island.Our mother's age is 80 years old November 23d 1894." On May 6, 1895 W. F. Lawton and Z. P. Humphreys, both of Sheffield, Illinois state: "We have known Maj Silas Battey and Mercy Battey his wife for nearly forty years & ever since they came to Illinois from Rhode Island and that they have always lived together as man & wife and now have a family of 10 children living and were never divorced to our knowledge. We have examined the record in their family Bible, which has the appearance of being over 60 years old and find the following Certificate "I hereby certify that the Bonds of Marriage between Silas Battey & Mercy Bennett both of Foster Rhode Island have been declared ?? by me signed James Burlingame Elder dated November 9th 1833." Battey, aged 45 and a resident of Reno County, Kansas filed a "Declaration for Original Invalid Pension." He enrolled on May 14, 1864 in Company "H" of the 139th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and was honorably discharged on October 28, 1864 at Peoria, Illinois. His personal description is as follows: "Age 45 years; height, five feet eight inches; complexion sandy; hair auburn; eyes blue." On a form dated January 15, 1898 Silas A. Battey states that his wife's name is Henrietta Battey and that they were married at Mineral, Illinois Nov. 7, 1869 and that his marriage is "supposed to be recorded at county seat Princeton Bureau Co. Ill." He gives the names of his children as follows: Cyril Urban Battey born Jan. 12, 1871; Effie M. Battey born Jan. 1, 1873; Avice (?) Battey born Dec. 3, 1879; Leonard O. Battey born June 2, 1877; Alonzo L. Battey born Mar. 26, 1887. On a subsequent application dated May 18, 1912 Silas A. Battey, aged 67 and a resident of Nickerson, Reno County, Kansas gives his date of birth as October 19, 1844 at Foster, Rhode Island. He states that since his service he has lived in Sheffield, Illinois until July 1872 , and since that time in Reno County, Kansas. On a form dated Apr. 23, 1915 his wife's maiden name is given as Scoughton (partially obscured by mark). Silas A. Battey's death certificate is in this file. It states that he died April 12, 1935 and that he was a widower at his death. His father's name was Silas Battey and he was born in Foster, Rhode Island. His mother's maiden name was Mercy Bennett and she was born in Foster, Rhode Island. The informant for the death certificate was Mrs. Effie Battey Benjamin of Deerfield, Kansas.
