Civil War Pension of John S. Beatty; 8 Independent Company Ohio Sharp Shooters; Certificate # 148,499; widow Susan A.; filed Ohio; Certificate # 247,879 State of Ohio, County of Jackson On this 28th day of September A. D. One thousand eight hundred and seventy two, personally appeared before me Judge of the Probate Court a court of record in and for the county and state aforesaid John S. Beatty who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is 27 years; that he is the identical John S. Beatty who enlisted under the name of John S. Beatty in the Military service of the United States at Jackson County, Ohio on the 2nd day of June in the year 1862 in Company E of the 87 Regiment of Ohio Infantry Volunteers and was honorably discharged on the 3rd day of October 1862 as a Paroled Prisoner. That he again enlisted under the name of John Beatty in the Military service of the United States at Jackson County Ohio on the 8th day of March in the year 1863 in Charles A. Barton's Company 8th Independent Sharp Shooters and was honorably discharged on the 19th day of July 1865, war of 1861. That his personal description is as follows: age 18, height 5 ft 9 inches, complexion fair, hair light, eyes blue. That while in the service aforesaid and in the line of his duty he received the following disability and that he was not treated for his disability in any hospital. The disease which he contracted was while at the City of Cincinnati on the 1st day of October 1863 on duty guarding cotton on the bank of the Ohio river by exposure to the cold and dampness in said service he took a very severe cold which so affected him that he could not speak above a whisper for eleven months and after recovering his speech he took pain in his breast and throat attended with a severe cough, with weakness of body, and falling off of flesh and at the present time his physical condition is such that he is unable to perform manual labor and that since leaving the service he has resided in Jackson County, Ohio and his occupation has been a farmer." On April 25, 1888, Susan A. Beatty, aged 39 and a resident of Jackson County, Ohio, filed a Claim for a Widow's pension. She states that her husband, John S. Beatty (pensioner under Certificate # 148,499) died of disease contracted in US Service April 21, 1888. She was married to John S. Beatty April 30, 1867 in Jackson County, Ohio; her maiden name was Susan A. Delay; a certified copy of her marriage record is in the file. She lists the following children under the age of 16: Eliza V. Beatty born April 30, 1872; Sanford A. born Sept. 3, 1873; Jacob J. born Feb. 13, 1875; Rutherford B. born July 31, 1876, Dora Belle born Oct. 28, 1878; Millie Z. born Nov. 2, 1880; Ira T. born Aug. 5, 1886; Irene F. born Jan. 9, 1888. Susan A. Beatty was last paid at the rate of $30 to June 4, 1921.
