West Augusta was administered from Fort Dunmore, Virginia's name for what is now Pittsburgh, beginning in 1775. The northern portion of Monongalia County, the northeastern portion of Ohio County, and all of Yohogania County were also known as Westmoreland County, PA which was a mother to several counties. The area that was the northwest corner of Monongalia became Washington County, PA in 1781, and most of that became Greene County, PA in 1796. The area that was the northeast corner of Monongalia became the southern portion of Fayette County, PA in 1783. The Darlington Memorial Library Manuscript Collection at the University of Pittsburgh lists the following: YOHOGANIA COUNTY, VIRGINIA. COURTS. Records, 1776-1779. 1 ms. vol. Copy of the original court records, including entries from Dec. 23, 1776 to March 25, 1779. Yohogania County was a Virginia county established in 1774, during the time when the sovereignty issue had not been resolved with Pennsylvania. In 1779 the controversy was settled in Pennsylvania's favor. Yohogania County included parts of these present-day Pennsylvania counties: Allegheny, Westmoreland, Washington, Fayette and Beaver. The original records covering 1776 to 1780 can be found in the Washington County, Pennsylvania, Courthouse.
