John Beattie, Company H 157th New York Infantry, Certificate # 163364, Filed New York, born Annon Scotland. On February 21, 1907 John Beattie, age 66 and a resident of East Homer, Cortland County, New York filed a Declaration for Pension under the Act of February 6, 1907. He states "that he is the identical person who was enrolled at Hamilton, NY under the name of John Beattie on the 23rd day of August, 1862 as a private in Co H 157th Regiment NY Infantry in the service of the United States, in the Civil war, and was honorably discharged at Charleston, S. C., on the 10th day of July 1865..That his personal description at enlistment was as follows: Height 5 feet 6 inches; complexion dark; color of eyes, blue; color of hair, black; that his occupation was farmer; that he was born July 19th, 1840 at Annon Scotland. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: no change. That he is pensioner, Certificate # 163364." On October 7, 1879 John Beattie, a resident of Cortland County, New York, filed a Claim for an Invalid Pension. He states "that from the year 1859 until his enlistment he resided in the town of Truxton, Cortland County, N. Y. with his father. That he was away from home a part of the time at work as a farm laborer & that ever since his discharge he has lived in the town of Homer, Cortland County New York & his occupation has been that of a farmer." On August 25, 1910 John Beattie states "that he lived with his mother Ellen Curry up to the time he was 15 years old at which time he went to live with Smith Miles in Fabius, Onondago Co N. Y. where he lived about 4 years and up to about 1859 that he lived in Preble N. Y. with Rockwell Skeele up to 1861 and that he lived in Truxton Cortland Co., N. Y. from that time up to the time he enlisted and affiant further says that there is no public record of his birth and there is no baptismal record of his birth and that if there ever was a family record of his birth it is lost or destroyed." A letter from the Bureau of Census is in the file, dated November 9, 1910. it states: "I am in receipt of your letter of September 2, 1910, "JAW, FMMcG, ECO, Civil War Division, Inv. Ctf. No. 163,364, John Beattie, Co. H, 157 New York Vol. Inf." In response thereto, I am enclosing herewith, a statement showing the name and ages of the family of Rockwell Skeel, as returned in Preble, Cortland county, New York, at the Census of 1860. No person named John Beattie, however was enumerated with this family. A statement is also enclosed showing the names and ages of the family of Cleryon Bliss, with whom one James Beattie was enumerated, in Cortlandville, Cortland county, New York, at the same census. This individual may be the person whose age is requested." He states his wife's maiden name was Priscilla C. Gutches and they were married December 25, 1865 in Truxton. He states that all of his children are living: Libbie Jane Beattie, now Waters, born Feb. 9, 1868; Rockwell M. Beattie, born May 7, 1869; Jessie E. Beattie (Hartnell) July 27, 1871; Elvira Grace Beattie (Gutches) Dec. 5, 1880; George Wallace Beattie born July 6, 1883. John Beattie was last paid at the rate of $72 per month to Nov. 4, 1928. In one record he states that he lived with his father in Truxton, Cortland County, New York and in another record he states he lived with his mother, Ellen Curry, until he was 15 years old. I could not find a birth record for John Beattie on Scotland's People.
