Civil War Pension of James Beattie, Company H 157th New York Infantry, Certificate # 1065607 [Original Available at the National Archives, Washington, D. C. H 157th NY Infantry.] On June 25, 1891 James Beattie, aged 45 and a resident of the town of Center, County of Richland and State of North Dakota, came before the Court in Cortland County, New York and declared "that he is the identical James Beattie who was enrolled on the 23rd day of August A D 1862 in Company "H" of the 157th Regiment of New York Infantry Volunteers commanded by Captain Garret D. Van Husen and was honorably discharged at Charleston, South Carolina on the 10th July A D 1865. That his personal description is as follows age 45 years, height five feet six inches, complexion sandy, eyes grey. That while a member of the organization aforesaid in the service and in the line of his duty at the Battle of Gettysburg in the State of Pennsylvania on or about the first day of July AD 1863 he received a gun shot wound just above the left ear causing dizziness by spells ever since and causing said ear to be almost if not entirely deaf..That since leaving the service this affiant has resided principally in ?? County of Cortland and State of New York and since about the first day of April A D 1880 he has resided in the town of Center County of Richland and State of North Dakota and his occupation has been mostly that of a farmer. That prior to his entry into the service above named he was a man of good sound physical health being when enrolled a farmer." On October 26, 1897 James Beattie, aged 52, and a resident of Farmington, Richland County, North Dakota, filed a supplement to Declaration for Invalid Pension. On December 14, 1907, James Beattie, age 62 and a resident of Fergus Falls, Otter Tail, Minnesota, filed a Claim for Pension under the Act of February 6, 1907. He states "that his personal description at enlistment was as follows: height 5 feet 6 inches; complexion sandy; color of eyes, grey; color of hair, light; that his occupation was farmer; that he was born December 14, 1845 at Pictou, Nova Scotia. That his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Truxton, NY from 1865 to 1875, in Doyden NY from 1875 to 1880, in Wahpeton, ND from 1880 to 1907, moved to Fergus Falls, October 1907. On May 25, 1912 James Beattie, aged 66 and a resident of St. Catharines, County of Lincoln, Ontario, Canada filed a Declaration for Pension under the Act of May 11, 1912. He states "that his several places of residence since leaving the service have been as follows: Cortland Co. '71 and Thompkins Co. NY '80 Farmington ND '96, Fergus Falls MN '09 and St Catherines Ont. That he is a pensioner under certificate No. 1065607." On December 21, 1915 Eliza Dwight, aged 63 and a resident of Cortland County, New York states "she is a sister of James Beattie, the applicant herein, and was brought up with him in the same family, and that she knows James Beattie is 70 years of age, having been born on the 13th day of December, 1845, which fact she knows and is able to state from her said relationship aforesaid, and from having heard it frequently stated in her presence by her father and mother that the said James Beattie was born on the 13th day of December, 1845, as above stated." Jennet Crampton, age 61 and a resident of Cortland County, New York also states that she is a sister of James Beattie. On December 15, 1915 James Beattie, age 70 and a resident of St. Catherines, Lincoln County, Ontario, Canada states "My father's name was Thomas Beattie. My mother's maiden name was Jennett B. Halliday and they are both dead. I hereto attach a copy of my family record taken from my father's family Bible and marked Exhibit A." Family Record. He also states he has "no children nor ever had any." A Certificate of registration of Death for James Beattie is in the file. He died April 18, 1935, aged 89 years, 4 months, 5 days in St. Catherines, Lincoln County, Ontario.
