Considering that it took six to eight weeks each way, that is more than enough time for a ship to make two voyages a year. I am not a nautical expert, but I suspect that ships were refitted at longer intervals. You might check with the staff of the Peabody Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, which has one of the premier nautical collections in the nation.
