    3. >From "Langholm Parish Memorials" available on CD from http://www.langholmarchivecentre.org.uk/ Langholm (Old ) Churchyard Interred here ARCHIBALD BEATTIE, Town Drummer, who for more than half a century kept up the ancient and annual custom of proclaiming the Langholm Fair at the Cross when riding the common granted to the town and pointing out to the inhabitants thereof the various boundaries of those rights which descended from their ancestors to posterity. He died in 1823 aged 90 years. The Managers of the Common Riding for the year 1829 have caused his name to be here inscribed as a tribute of respect justly due to his memory. [Calculating back, his date of birth would be 1733.] Using the Old Parish Records available on http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ I found the following, which I believe to be Archibald Beattie: 05/09/1732 BEATY ARCHIBALD/ ARCHIBALD BEATY/ROSSINA FORSYTH/ M /Langholm or Staplegorton /DUMFRIES [Town Drummer] 21/02/1731 BEATY CHRISTOPHER/ ARCHIBALD BEATY/ROSSINA FORSYTH/ M /Langholm or Staplegorton /DUMFRIES [Brother to Town Drummer] A possible Marriage for Archibald Beattie: 21/05/1764 BEATTIE ARCHEBALD MAGDALANE BEATTIE/ U Langholm or Staplegorton /DUMFRIES A Possible Child: 19/02/1769 BEATTIE MARGARET ARCHEBALD BEATTIE/MAGDALEN BEATTIE/ F Langholm or Staplegorton /DUMFRIES Laurel Baty, L252
