Laurel, This is fascinating. The surnames on the list from the mid 1600s are Batie, Beatie, Beattie, Betie, and Bettie. Why is there no Beatty, Beaty, Baty, etc.? Is it because whoever compiled the orignal lists employed the 'ie' ending as a matter of policy. Or, by 1650, were all the 'y's already shipped to Northern Ireland, etc.?
