    3. Hi Tom, As lowlanders originally the Beatties/Beattys would not have had their own tartan. However, the family spread out across Scotland over the centuries and as I understand the customs of the time, anyone who pledged allegiance to a particular Highland clan chieftain was entitled to wear the tartan, as ell of course as any inter-marriage. This may explain why there appears to be a plethora of conflicting information on the internet about which tartan to use. Years ago I was advised by Scotch House in London to use the MacBeth tartan, which I duly did, but now I see that that connection is in doubt and the Beattie name is linked to MacBain, MacFarlane, MacDonald and others - very confusing! However, new tartans continue to be developed and I see that there is one specifically in the name of Beatty and registered with The Scottish Register of Tartans (part of the official Archives of Scotland), which seems to be a variation of the McBeth tartan: http://www.tartanregister.gov.uk/tartanDetails.aspx?ref=236 My own Beattie/Betie/Bedie ancestors (baptism records depended on the literacy standards of the respective local church minister!) came from Northeast Scotland around Aberdeen, though they appear to have migrated there in the mid-17th century, possibly from the Lothians (around Edinburgh) judging by similarities in the Christian names of their children (usually named after parents, uncles, aunts or grandparents). Hope it helps! Diana (no line number as yet!) On 15 Oct 2010, at 08:00, bp2000-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. Clan(s) (Thomas M. Beatty) > 2. Being my line BP-05 has no match with other BP lineages, and they are from Ayrshire, Scotland about 100 + miles north of the major contingence of Beattys along the boarder. T can't prove it yet, but I think my Beattys are part of the McBeth clan. > > I don't believe, the boarder Beattys are members of a Clan. > > to find out of a clan honors the Beattyname you have to go to the website and see the surnames connected to that clan. > > Nelda > > > ~o~o~o~o~o0o0o0o0o0o~o~o~o~o > Nelda L.
