Lineage 5....born Ohio.... from L5 file: The People of Iowa 1931 Vol. 3 pg. 243 L-5 Alex Steel Beatty is a physician and surgeon whose work has been in Iowa for twenty five years and who has worthily won an exceptionally high rating in his profession. Dr. Beatty since 1912 has been a resident of Creston. He was born at Greenfield, Ohio, September 19, 1875, son of Calvin O. and Mary (Steel) Beatty, both natives of Ohio. His grandfather, Alex N. Beatty, was a native of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and went to Ohio in 1833. The maternal grandfather, James Steel, was born in Glasgow, Scotland, and was nine years of age when he went to Ohio. Eight of his brothers came over on the same ship. James Steel lived to be ninety-seven years of age. Calvin O. Beatty spent his active life as a farmer and died in 1914. His widow survives him and resides at Greenfield, Ohio. Both are active members of the Presbyterian Church. Calvin Beatty was an early advocate of prohibition and was a strong Union man, and before the war one of the stations of the "underground railway" was on his Ohio farm. Three of his brothers were Union soldiers. Calvin Beatty and wife had four children: Alex Steel; Walter O., manager of the Fayette County Cooperative Association at Washington Courthouse, Ohio; James E., a farmer at Greenfield; and William K., who is also a farmer at Greenfield. Alex Steel Beatty completed his literary education in Miami University at Oxford, Ohio, in 1900. He then entered the Chicago Homeopathic Medical College, graduating in 1903, and for two years had the advantage of special internship training and experience in the Cook County Hospital. In 1905 he came to Iowa, and for seven years practiced at Council Bluffs before locating at Creston. Here his work has been in the general field of medicine, and his professional duties have at all times had the first claim upon his energies and talents. During the world war he was a member of the exemption board. He belongs to the Union County, Iowa State and American Medical Assoiations, the Southwest Iowa Medical Society. He is affiliated with the Masonic Fraternity, belongs to the local golf club, and is one of the trustees of the Presbyterian Church. His wife has membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution. Dr. Beatty married in 1901 Miss Aimee P. Brown, daughter of George Brown, a farmer. She was born at Lyndon, Ohio, and attended an academy at South Salem in that state.
