    3. I am having a problem with Sterling H. and John J. Beaty I have the line of Sterling complete except from when I went to do John Beaty, Sterling's brother, things didn't add up. I am hoping someone has other information on these two Beaty's. The information I have is below. Any help would be appreciated. Linda Randolph Kane, Sterling's great great granddaughter. >From Beaty 2000 Project L2C 3 John J. Beaty 1849 - 1868 ..... 4 Pocahontas Beaty 1871 - ... 3 Sterling H. Beaty 1849 - 1880 ... +Elizabeth 1857 - ..... 4 Lula Beaty 1877 - ..... 4 John Beaty 1879 - In the 1870 census it shows John J Beaty 1849, Hannah F Gentry Beaty and Sterling H. Beaty as born in 1849. I think something is wrong here because John and Sterling were not twins, that I know. In the 1880 census it shows Sterling 24 being born in 1856 and John Beaty as 27 and Pocahontas as 9. In the Beaty Lineage Chart L2C, it shows John J.'s death as 1868, 3 years before Pocahontas' death and before both the 1870 and 1880 census where he is recorded.

    3. THANK YOU! I am getting ready to print the tree and information for our reunion. This is the most information I have on Sterling. I can't even find out when he died for sure and where is buried. 1. [BP2000] Census - Good documentation or not
    2. Nelda Percival
    3. Linda, The census is notorious for its errors. I don't know when enumerators started being paid by the hour but in the 1800s they were paid by the household. So, they would take the information from anyone that was there including children. If they found no one home they would ask the neighbors if there were any. The people listed, might even be listed by nicknames instead of christian names. Spellings were horrid, there were no rules for spelling until after the first encylopedia in the middle to late 1800s. When using a census for documentation you should try for additional secondary documentation. Such as Tax records, church records.. sometime in the latter 1800s the federal government required the states to start keeping birth and death records. Some states did not comply untill the begining of the 1900s. The federal census are not the only census, there were state and agruicultural census too. So, don't be upset when you find errors in the federal census. Also transcription errors - LOL I think Ancestry.com has outsourced the transcription of the census records... Some of the Spelling errors are actually funny if you weren't desperatly looking for the person. When ever you can, view the actual census document... This error needs correction... In the Beaty Lineage Chart L2C, it shows John J.'s death as 1868, 3 years before Pocahontas' death and before both the 1870 and 1880 census where he is recorded. You will need to contact Mike Allen so he can correct the data Nelda Nelda L.
