Hi Donna, I spent some time on your query because I'm a Pennsylvania resident and because I've been researching L2b Beaty roots in Chester County. I think it's odd that I can't find a Shepherdsburg on Penn. maps—or Maryland or West Virginia or Delaware in any of the areas that might have been in PA before 1775, when James Beatty was born. I ran across all the references sent to you yesterday by other researchers. The contemporary mention of the Allen Martin from Shepherdsburg PA. interviewed in Frederick, MD would suggest that the town still exists. I can't find anything close in Washington County, PA. There's a Shepherdstown just south of Harrisburg on Rte. 15, but I don't think it has much history. There's a Shepherdstown West Virginia about 20 miles west of Frederick, MD, near Harper's Ferry. Of course, town and burg are often confused, and there were Beatys in both areas at the time. However, I think it's possible that "Shepherdsburg" is really "Shippensburg"…the latter is an unfamiliar name and people hear it as something more familiar. There are two Allan Martins in Shippensburg. The interviewer in Frederick, who may never have heard of Shippensburg, may have misunderstood what the Pennsylvania visitor said. Another online mention of Shepherdsburg PA refers to a woman born in Mont Alto, PA (about 15-20 miles south of Shippensburg) who went to "Shepherdsburg Teachers College" in the 20th century. I can find no such institution, but Shippensburg State Teachers College is well known and close by. Another online reference is the deposition of a James Fleming, taken much later in life, who enlisted in the Revolutionary War "at Shepardsburg, Pennsylvania…He joined the Army at Valley Forge." Shippensburg is in central PA and Valley Forge in eastern PA, but the rivers and established Indian paths allowed people to move back and forth pretty freely in the 18th c. Finally, and most interestingly, the online "Rebel Boast First at Bethel Last at Appomattox" recounts the progress of a Confederate unit moving northwest into Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. On p. 118, they enter "Shepherdsburg" at dawn after a march beginning at midnight in Chambersburg and moving in a Northwest trajectory toward Carlisle. I feel sure it must have been Shippensburg, which was a well-established town much like the description at the time. The distance between Chambersburg and Shippensburg is 11 miles, which seems about right. I realize that this theory just offers another possibility, but Beatys were thick on the ground in that area and it might help locate your James Beatty. I'm particularly interested in the information that he was English, not Scots, and that his daughter married into a Quaker-educated family. I've been looking at Quaker and Mennonite associations of my L2b family and would appreciate hearing from anyone with pertinent information who made it this far in this email. Robin, I found the following information and with further research it states that John Purdue was born 3 miles from the city of Huntingdon, Huntingdon Co., PA. but cannot find reference to Shepardsburg, PA., again Julie Miller, L.39 John PurduePURDUE, John, philanthropist, born near Shepardsburg, Pennsylvania, S October, 1S01; died in Lafayette, Indiana, 12 September, 1876. In his early youth he emigrated to Ohio with his parents. He received a common-school education, taught for a time, became a dry-goods merchant, settled in Lafayette, Indiana, in 1889, and accumulated a fortune, also engaging in manufacturing. Mr. Purdue was owner of the Lafayette "Journal," and in 1866 was an unsuccessful independent candidate for congress. In 1869 he founded Purdue university in his adopted town, giving $150,000 toward its endowment. Edited Appletons Encyclopedia
